ItwasalongtimebeforeRachelgotofftosleep.TheinitialdisappointmentthatshewasnottorideCatchBoyquicklygavetoexcitement.HayDays,shedecided,wasratherahappynameforahorse.Asshewasridingagainstfellowamateurs,thecompetitionshouldn’tbesosevere.Ifshemademistakesperhapstheywouldn’tbeasnoticeableastheywouldinaracedominatedbyprofessionalmaleriders.

Herfather,onhearingthenews,hadevenofferedtodrivetoChesterfieldtosupporther.Rachel,thoughgratefulthatherfatherhadatlonglastacceptedherambitions,thoughtthatitwasn’tagoodidea.Ifshehadafallormadeadisastrouserrorofjudgement,shedidn’twantanymemberofherfamilytoobserveit.

ThefollowingmorningwasmoistandmistyandRachel’sfirstfearwasthatracingatChesterfieldmightbeabandonedbecauseoffog.Shelistenedtoweatherreportsonherradioasshemadebreakfastbutshelearnedlittlethathelpedtoclarifythesituation.Inanycase,localfogoftendisappearedrapidlywhenthesunbrokethroughandthat’swhy,insuchconditions,nodecisionaboutcancellationwouldbetakenearly.

Toherdelight,HayDaysturnedouttobeaverygood-lookingdeepchestnuthorse.BillyAllawaywasalreadyintheracingpaddock,wherealltheracehorseswerewaiting.

Whentheeditorcontactedmewithanideaforanarticle,myinitialwasannoyance.I’dbeenillforaweek,andI’dfallenbehindonschoolwork,debateteamassignments,andcollegeapplicationessays.[9][]Myfirstthoughtwas,‘Ohgreat,anotherthingtodealwith!

WhenIdiscovered,however,thatthethingwasaninvitationtointerviewthejournalistNicholasKristof,myirritationvanishedcompletely.Whatanopportunity!

I’dalwaysbeenanenthusiasticreaderofhisarticlesinTheNewYorkTimes.[10][]Iwasfascinatedbyhishumanitarianandjournalisticcareer,andIwasverymuchlookingforwardtomeetinghimandwritinganarticleabouthimfortheschoolmagazine.

AlthoughIamanativeNewYorker,I’dneverbeentotheNewYorkTimesbuilding.Ifoundthemoderndesignattractive,andalsodiscoveredthatthecafeteriaservedexcellentfood.[11][]EventhoughIknowasinglecomputercouldholdallthatinformationandmore,seeingthemwasareminderoftheincrediblevolumeofinformationandanalysisthatgoesintowritingnewspaperarticles.

I’dspentafewhourspreparingwithmyclassmateEliza,who’dalsobeeninvitedtotakepartintheinterview.We’ddiscussedwhatquestionstoaskNicholasKristofandI’dwrittenthemonseparatepiecesofcard.AlthoughIfeltready,itwasstillarelieftobesharingtheinterviewwithEliza[12][]Asitturnedout,Ishouldn’thavebeensonervous.

WhenNicholasKristofwelcomedusintohisoffice,hewascharming,andthroughoutthemeetingheseemedgenuinelyinterestedintalkingtous.Hedidn’thurryusandgaveusthechancetoaskourquestions.[13][]Asitprogressed,thingsgotbetteranditfeltlesslikeavolleyofquestionsandanswersandmorelikeanormalconversation.

Theinterviewwasfilmedanditwasinterestingformetolearnexactlyhowthiswasdone.Whenwearrived,weweretoldthatwewouldhavetodotheinterviewtwice.ThefirsttimethecameramanfilmedNicholasKristofonly.[14][]Weweren’tabletoseethefinalresultthatdaybutNicholasKristofhaspromisedtosendthefilmtouswhenit’sfinished.

Bytheendoftheday.I’dlearnedalotaboutinterviewingpeople.[15][]Inparticular,I’llhavetotryandmaketheconversationseemmorenatural.But,overall,itwasanincredibleexperience,andI’mverygratefultotheschoolmagazineforhavinggivenmesuchanamazingopportunity–despitehowlongittookmetorespondtotheirinitialphonecall.
