Ellenhashadtolearnmanythings,becausesailingsingle-handedmeansthatshehastobeherowncaptain,electrician,sailmaker,engineer,doctor,journalist,cameramanandcook.Shealsohastobeveryfit,andbecauseofthedangersofsleepingforlongperiodsoftimewhenshe’sinthemiddleoftheocean,shehastrainedherselftosleepforabout20minutesatime.

Andsheneedscourage.Once,inthemiddleoftheocean,shehadtoclimbthemastofherboattorepairthesails-atfouro’clockinthemorning,andwith100kphwindsblowingaroundher.Ittookhermanyhourstomaketherepairs;Ellensays:
