Thisfilmisaboutprejudiceandsocialclassinmid1950sAmerica,atatimewhenitwasstillcommonforeveneducatedpeopletobeshamelesslyprejudice（Racismmayalwaysbearound,butbythe1970s,itwasprobablynolongeracceptableforanyeducatedAmericantoadmitthattheywerearacist）.

Specifically,itisthestoryofDavidGreen,ahandsome,athleticJewishkidfromScranton,Pennsylvania,whoisgiventhechancetogototheprestigiousSt.MatthewsAcademyinMassachusetts（seePrepSchoolnotebelow）.

Thisistheopportunityofalife-timeforDavid,becausethosestudentswhoattendSt.Matt’sareoftenabletogoontoHarvard,oroneoftheothergreatAmericanuniversities.Andasakidfromaworkingclassneighborhood,thisopportunitywouldnormallynothaveoccurredforDavid.Somehow,though,thefootballcoachatStMatt’sdiscoveredthatheisatruestarathlete,andthushewasabletogetDavidafullscholarshipforhislastyearofhighschool.

WhenDavidarrivesatSt.Matt’s,hediscoversaworldofamazingwealth,andofstudentswhooftendon’tappreciatehowluckytheyaretobebornintotheprivilegedsocialclasstheycomefrom.Still,heisabletodowellinclassesandleadtheschoolfootballteamtoawinningseason.HemakessomefriendsandmeetsSally,buthealsolearnsthatevenhere,anti-Semitism

（racismagainstJews）isbothacceptedandcommon.Thus,DavidchoosestokeephisJudaismtohimself,butwhenthatfactbecomesknown,hemustfacethegeneralhostilityofsome,andthecrueltyofCharlieDilloninparticular…..

ANoteonPrepSchoolsandtheIvyLeague:

PreparatorySchools,whichareusuallycalledPrepSchools,areprivatehighschoolsthatareconsideredamongthebestintheUnitedStates.ManyofthemareintheNortheast,andsomeofthemarestillforjustboys.Theyareextremelyexpensive,andthusmostprepschoolstudentsarechildrenofthecountry’srichestpeople.TheSt.Matthew’sAcademyinthisfilmisfictional,butitcloselyresemblesseveralrealprepschoolsfoundthroughoutMassachusetts.

Theprimaryreasonthatrichparentssendtheirkidstoprepschoolsisthatattendanceatsuchaplacegreatlyincreasesthechancesthatastudentwillbeabletogotooneofthecountry’sbestuniversities.Amongthoseuniversities,thebestknownaretheso-calledIvyleagueschoolsoftheNortheast,namedaftertheivyplantthatgrowsontheirbuildings.TheseincludeHarvard（inBoston,Massachusetts）,Yale（inNewHaven,Connecticut）andPrinceton（inPrinceton,NewJersey）.
