ResearchershavepreviouslycollectedsmallnumbersofbacteriafromiceinAntarcticaandGreenland,buttheycouldnotdeterminewhetherthesewereactivebacteriaorjustfrozencellsblowninbywind.Incontrast,theearthbeneathtwoSwissglaciersharborslargecoloniesofbacteria—hundredsofmillionsofcellspergram—thatappeartobegrowingat0℃.

Scientistsfolloweduponthesefindingsbytakingsamplesofice,water,andearthattwomountainglaciers.Theyfoundthatearthbeneaththeglacierscontainedmuchlargerpopulationsofbacteriathandidsurfaceandinnerpartofice.Thosefindingsindicatethatthebacteriaweregrowingatthebottomoftheglacierandarenotsomethingwashedinwhilethescientistsdrilledthroughtheice.

Lookingatthebacteriaunderamicroscope(显微镜),theresearchersfoundthatmanywereintheprocessofdividing,andhealthyundertheice.Thebacteriamightbreakdownmineralsandplantremainsoriginallyburiedbeneaththeglacierorlaterwashedinbywatergoingslowlythroughtheice,scientistssay.

“Someoftheassumptionswehavemadeinthepastnowmustbeseriouslyquestioned,”sayresearchers.“IfbacteriacanliveunderglaciersonEarth,whynotonotherplanets?
