Thisuncontrolled cycle speedsupandintensifiesclimatechange,saysJerryMeliloofMarineBiologicalLaboratoryinMassachusetts.Melilowasnotpartofthestudy.

Overall,soilreleasesaboutninetimesmorecarbonthanhuman-causedactivities.Butthatispartofanaturalcycle:

Theamountofcarbonreleasedintotheairisaboutequaltothecarbonoceansandplantstakein.

However,carbonreleasedfromfossilfuelcausesanimbalance.Burningcoal,oilandnaturalgasputsmorecarbonintotheatmospherethannaturecantakeout.Theadditionalcarbonheatstheairandsoil.Andastheairandsoilgethotter,theearthwillreleaseyetmorecarbonthanithasbeenholding.
