BACKGROUNDOFTHEINVENTION
1.FieldoftheInvention
Thepresentinventionrelatestoautomaticdooropenersandothersystemsforopeningorclosingadoor.Moreparticularly,thepresentinventionrelatestoamechanicalarmsystemforopeningadoor,especiallyaSensitiveCompartmentedInformationFacility(SCIF)door,inwhichnocomponentofthemechanicalarmsystemismountedon,ormakespermanentcontactwith,thedoor.
2.BackgroundArt
Automaticdooropeners,formanydifferentapplications,arewellknownintheart.Automaticdooropenersmaybeequippedondoorsofpublicfacilitiestoallowpassagethroughthedoorwayofpeoplewithouttheirmanualoperation.Automaticdooropenersmayincorporatehydraulic,pneumatic,andelectromechanicaldevices.Forexample,aconventionalautomaticdooropenerforopeningorclosingadoorincludesanacontrolunit,anactuatordrivingadriveshaftandanarticulatedopenerarmextendingbetweenthedriveshaftandthedoor.Anendoftheopenerarmiseitherpermanentlymountedononeofthedoororthedoorframe,withtheactuatoranddriveshaftcombinationmountedontheotherofthedoorframeorthedoor.Theopenerarmrespondstomovementofthedriveshafttoextendorcontractsoastomovethedoortoanopenorclosedposition,respectively.Thecontrolunitmayincludeadjustabletimersandsensorstocontrolthemovementofthedoor,andtoidentifywhenanobstacleisencounteredinthedoor'spathway.Typically,thedooropenermustcompleteitsopeningprocessofplacingthedoorintheopenpositionbeforeclosureofthedoorcanbeinitiated.
Consequently,suchaconventionaldooropenerisunacceptableforusewithaSCIFdoor.TherequirementsforanSCIFdooraredictatedbytheU.S.government,andtwooftheserequirementsprovidethat,exceptforthelock,keybypass,adoorcloser,andcrash-putbar,nothingadditionalcanbeinstalledwhichmakespermanentcontactwiththedoorandthatthedoormustbeabletoreturntoitsclosedstate,quickly,atanypointinitsforwardopeningcycle.
Whatisneeded,therefore,isamechanismforautomaticallyopeningadoor,inwhichnoneofthemechanism'scomponentsaremountedonthedooritself,andfurtherallowsforclosureofthedoorfromanypositionduringthedooropeningprocess.Thepresentinventionsatisfiestheseandotherneeds,aswillbemadeapparentbythedescriptionofthepresentinventionthatfollows.
