Iparticipatedinalotofextra-curricularactivities.Iwasaswimmer,Iwasonthenewspaper,Iwasontheyearbook;um,Ididplays,ofcourse,Isanginthechorus.Um,soIwasfairlywell-known,Iknewalotofpeople,butIwasn’tnecessarilyclosetomanypeople.Um,myparentswereverystrict,verytraditionalandconservative,sowhenIcamehomefromschoolIwasexpectedtositdownforfourandfivehourstodomyhomework.

Howeverlongittook.Um,andwhileIwasdoingmyhomework,Icouldonlylistentocertainkindsofmusic.Likeclassical,forexample.BecausetheythoughtifIlistenedtopopwhileIwasdoinghomework,I’dbedistracted.So,Ikindofgrewupdevelopingatasteforclassicalmusicwithoutrealizingit.Itbecamekindofanecessarybackgroundforme;somethingthatautomaticallyputsmeatease,putsmeinakindofmeditativemood.

Notreally.Ialmostfeelasthoughmydecisiontobecomeanactorwasmyrebellion,becauseupuntilthatpointI’dbeenonaverytraditionalpath.Um,I’dworkedhardinschool,I’dgonetothebestcollegethatIwasabletogetinto,andIthinktheexpectationwasthatIwasgoingtohaveajobwithadesk,andasteady9-5,andapaycheck,andanassistantofmyown,thatkindofthing.Butdecidingtobecomeanactorwasalittlebitlikedecidingtostepoffacliff.Iwasn’tsurewhatwasgoingtohappennext.Therewasnoroadmap,therewasnorecipeforsuccess.SointhatwayIthinkIhadmyrebellion,itwasjustafewyearslaterthanyouraveragekid.

Um,anythingandeverything.MostlyIsatbehindadesk,andansweredphonesforotherpeople.Infact,whenIeventuallyauditionedforPrisonBreak—whenIauditionedforMichaelScofield—IhadtogototheFoxStudios,tothelot,andreadforaroomfulofexecutives,maybethirtyorfortypeople,andhalfofthosepeopleI’veactuallytempedforatonepoint,becauseIhadbeenworkingsolonginthebusinessasatempt,waitingformybigbreak.

Yeah,itwasgoodactually,becauseitmademerealizethatallofthesefacelessindividuals,whoImighthaveassumedwereintimidating,scary,all-powerfulwereactuallyjusthumanbeings.TheyhadthesamehopesanddreamsandfearsthatIdid,andthat’sbecauseIgottoseethemfromatotallydifferentperspective.

Wereyoueverfeelinglike,“OK,thisistoohard.I’mjustgoingtoquit”?
WentworthMiller:
Absolutely,Ithinkit’saverydifficultbusiness.AndthereweremanytimeswhenIfeltasthoughIwastheonlyonewhobelievedinmyself.Iwasn’thearingverymany“Yeses”outthereinthebusiness.WhatIwashearingwasalotof“Nos”,butbecausetherereallywasnoPlaneB,becauseIdidn’twanttobealawyeralso,oradoctoralso,Ihadnochoice,buttostickwithit,that’smyonlyalternative.
