Myfather,WinstonChurchill,beganhisloveaffairwithpaintinginhis40s,amiddisastrouscircumstances.AsFirstLordoftheAdmiraltyin1915,hehadbeendeeplyinvolvedinacampaignintheDardanellesthatcouldhaveshortenedthecourseofabloodyworldwar.Butwhenthemissionfailed,withgreatlossoflife,Churchillpaidtheprice,bothpubliclyandprivately:

HewasremovedfromtheAdmiraltyandlosthispositionofpoliticalinfluence. 

Overwhelmedbythedisaster—"Ithoughthewoulddieofgrief,"saidhiswife,Clementine—heretiredwithhisfamilytoHoeFarm,acountryretreatinSurrey.There,asChurchilllaterrecalled,"Themuseofpaintingcametomyrescue!

Onedaywhenhewaswanderinginthegarden,hechanceduponhissister-in-lawsketchingwithwatercolours.Hewatchedherforafewminutes,thenborrowedherbrushandtriedhishand—andthemuseworkedhermagic.Fromthatdayforward,Winstonwasinlovewithpainting. 

DelightedwithanythingthatdistractedWinstonfromthedarkthoughtsthatoverwhelmedhim,Clementinerushedofftobuywhateverpaintsandmaterialsshecouldfind.Watercolours,oilpaints,paper,canvas—HoeFarmwassoonfilledwitheverythingapaintercouldwantorneed. 

PaintinginoilsturnedouttobeWinston'sgreatlove—butthefirststepswerestrangelydifficult.Hecontemplatedtheblankwhitenessofhisfirstcanvaswithunaccustomednervousness.Helaterrecalled:

 

"VeryhesitantlyIselectedatubeofbluepaint,andwithinfiniteprecautionmadeamarkaboutasbigasabeanonthesnow-whitefield.AtthatmomentIheardthesoundofamotorcarinthedriveandthrewdownmybrushinapanic.IwasevenmorealarmedwhenIsawwhosteppedfromthecar:

thewifeofSirJohnLavery,thecelebratedpainterwholivednearby.

'shedeclared.'Whatfun.Butwhatareyouwaitingfor?

Letmehavethebrush—thebigone.'SheplungedintothepaintsandbeforeIknewit,shehadsweptseveralfiercestrokesandslashesofblueontheabsolutelyterrifiedcanvas.Anyonecouldseeitcouldnothitback.Ihesitatednomore.Iseizedthelargestbrushandfelluponmywretchedvictimwithwildfury.Ihaveneverfeltanyfearofacanvassince." 

Lavery,wholatertutoredChurchillinhisart,saidofhisunusualpupil'sartisticabilities:

"Hadhechosenpaintinginsteadofpolitics,hewouldhavebeenagreatmasterwiththebrush." 

Inpainting,Churchillhaddiscoveredacompanionwithwhomhewastowalkforthegreaterpartofhislife.Paintingwouldbehiscomfortwhen,in1921,thedeathofhismotherwasfollowedtwomonthslaterbythelossofhisandClementine'sbelovedthree-year-olddaughter,Marigold.Overcomebygrief,WinstontookrefugeatthehomeoffriendsinScotland—andinhispainting.HewrotetoClementine:

"Iwentoutandpaintedabeautifulriverintheafternoonlightwithredandgoldenhillsinthebackground.Manylovingthoughts....Alas,IkeepfeelingthehurtofMarigold." 

Lifeandloveandhopeslowlyrevived.InSeptember1922anotherchildwasborntoClementineandWinston:

myself.Inthesameyear,WinstonboughtChartwell,thebelovedhomehewastopaintinallitsdifferentaspectsforthenext40years. 

Myfathermusthavefeltaglowofsatisfactionwheninthemid-1920shewonfirstprizeinaprestigiousamateurartexhibitionheldinLondon.Entrieswereanonymous,andsomeofthejudgesinsistedthatWinston'spicture—oneofhisfirstofChartwell—wastheworkofaprofessional,notanamateur,andshouldbedisqualified.Butintheend,theyagreedtorelyontheartist'shonestyandweredelightedwhentheylearnedthatthepicturehadbeenpaintedbyChurchill. 

Historianshavecalledthedecadeafter1929,whenWinstonagainfellfromoffice,hisbarrenyears.Politicallybarrentheymayhavebeen,ashislonelyvoicestruggledtoawakenBritaintothemenaceofHitler,butartisticallythoseyearsboreabundantfruit:

ofthe500-oddChurchillcanvasesinexistence,roughlyhalfdatefrom1930to1939. 

PaintingremainedajoytoChurchilltotheendofhislife."Happyarethepainters,"hehadwritteninhisbookPaintingasaPastime,"fortheyshallnotbelonely.Lightandcolour,peaceandhope,willkeepthemcompanytotheendoftheday."Andsoitwasformyfather.
