Thename“Juyong”inchinesemeans“aplaceofpoorlaborers”.accordingtohistoricalrecords,EmperorQinShihuangforcedmanyconscriptstobuildthispartoftheGreatwall.

insideJuyongPassthereisanancientmarbleplatformknownas“cloudTerrace”.itwasfirstbuiltin1342duringtheYuandynasty.ThereusedtobethreeTibetanstylepagodasbuiltontheterracewitharoadpassingunderitfromnorthtosouth.Therefore,itwasalsocalled“ThecrossingRoadPagoda”.Later,whenthepagodasweredestroyed,atemplewasbuiltontheverysite.However,thetemplewasburntdowninafireintheearlyyearsoftheQingdynasty,soonlytheterraceremained.TherearealsoBuddhistscripturesinscribedonthestonewallintheSanskrit,Tibetan,Basiba(akindofmongolianscript),Xixia,UygurandHanlanguages.Theyofferuswonderfulexamplesoftheirexquisiteworkmanshipandvividnessincarving.TheyareextremelyvaluabletothestudyofBuddhismandancientlanguages.
