Abstract

GoneWiththeWindselectsmaterialfromtheUSCivilWarandthepostwarreconstructionsituationlengthywork.Itisregardedasoneofthemostfavorablenovelsinthewindliterature.ItisAmericanwriter-MargaretMitchell’sfirstandonlynovel.Whenitwaspublishedfirstin1936,itattractednumerousreaders,especiallyfemalereaders,andwasevenmadeintothemovie,whichusesthesamenameofthework.Afteritspublication,MitchellwonthePulitzerPrize.Thisworkmaybeliterallytranslatedas“GoneWiththeWind”,whichisfromthemouthofScarlett,totheeffectthatthiswar,isliketheseaasHurricaneher“wholeworld”,shealsodreamsofthefamilyandher“GoneWiththeWind”.

ThisthesistriestoexcavatedthemostbrilliantbrightspotfromanalysisofScarlett’scharacter,anddisplaythereflectionoffemaleconsciousnessinthenovel,maybeitwillgiveainspirationtomodernfemale.

---郝思嘉奥哈拉,现代女性的榜样

内容摘要

《飘》是一部取材于美国南北战争和战后重建情况的长篇巨著,是美国作家玛格丽特米歇尔第一部也是唯一一部小说,并被认为是世界文学史上最有魅力的小说之一。

1936年出版以后,它吸引了无数的读者,尤其是女性读者,并且被拍成同名电影,玛格丽特米歇尔也因此获得普利策文学奖。

这部作品可直译为“随风飘逝”,它就是出自郝思嘉之口,大意是说那场战争像飓风一样卷走了她的“整个世界”,她家的农场及她的旧梦也“随风飘逝”了。

本文试图从分析郝思嘉的性格特征中挖掘出她人性中最光辉的闪光点,并揭示女性意识在小说中的体现,或许对现代女性会有所启发。

Bookandfilm,GoneWiththeWindhasbeenrunningnearlyeightyyears,pilinguprecordsandbuildingitsownhistoryandlegends.thebookhassoldmorethan26millioncopiesbytheyear2009–in28languagesandinatleast185editions.ThefilmsweptallthemajorOscarawardsin1939excepttheBestActor.GoneWiththeWindmakesalegend,andthelegendwillneverbegonewiththewind.

B.AboutScarlettO’Hara

Scarlett,themostvitalwomaninAmericanliterature,isgoingtosurviveanytime,Thischaracterisverycharming,thoughshemayhavesomeshortcomings.Maybehershortcomingsmakeshermorerealandlovely.Sheisself-centered,shealwaysfollowwhatshewantsandsheisdetermined.Sheisindependent,sheneverdependsonanotherhumanbeingotherthanherself.Scarlettisnevertolookback,sheknewthatthelazyluxuryoftheolddayswasgone,nevertoreturn.Infact,theonlycomplexitiesshefailedtounderstandwerethosethathadnopracticalusefulnesstoher.

Thisthesisiscomposedoffourchapters.Thefirstchapterisanintroduction.Inthispart,thewritergivesbriefintroductionaboutthenovelandtheheroine-Scarlett.

ThesecondchapterisadetailedintroductionaboutthecharacterofScarlettO’Hara.Itanalysishercharacterfromthreeaspects:

herforthrightcharacter,herbraveandherpersistenceforlove.

Chapterthreeisthecoreofthethesis.ItdisplaysScarlett’smostnicecharactersandmakesabriefintroductionofmodernfemale’stypicalcharactertoshowwecanlearnmanyfromScarlett.

Chapterfourintroduceswhatisfemaleconsciousnessandthereflectioninthenovel.

Finally,thethesismakesaconclusionwhichisbasedontheresultsoftheanalysisandpointsoutthesignificanceofthethesis.AccordingtotheanalysisonthecharacterofScarlettO’Hara,thethesishelpstoenhancethereaders’understandingofScarlettO’Hara.

A.Scarlett’sforthrightcharacter

Scarlett’swholelifecenteredaroundherownwants,andwhatshewantedforemostwasattentionandadulationinasettingofcomfortandsecurity.She“was,inreality,self-willed,vainandobstinate;shecouldneverlongendureanyconversationofwhichshewasnotthechiefsubject.“Atthebeginningofthebook,whentheTarletontwinssatwithher“inthecoolshadeoftheporchofTara,”talkingaboutthecomingwar,shegotimpatient:

Ifyousay“war”justoncemore,I’llgointhehouseandshutthedoor.Ifyousay“war”again,I’llgointhehouse.

Whenshebecameawidowandhadtowear“likeacrowwithhotblacktattfetatoherwristsandbuttoneduptoherchin,withnotevenahintoflaceorbraid,notajewelexceptEllen’sonyxmourningbrooch”,shethought“IfIwereagirl,IfIcoulddanceandflirt!

”,andwasenviousofothergirls’pleasures,aswhom“shewasthreetimesasattractive”.Sheevencouldn’tforegowearinganewbonnettomakeherselfprettyabdnoticed.

Herdramatic,attention-seeking,andhistrionicbehaviorindeedwenttotheextentoflyingtoachieveheraims.SeekingattentionwasawayoflifetoScarlett,andifshehadtoexaggerate,actorevenlie,theseactsweremerelytools,usedbyherwithartisan’sskill.Therearetwofamousscenesinthenovel,inwhichbyacting,exaggerating,evenlying,Scarletttriedtoseektwomen’sattentiontoachievehergoal.

Sheputonnewdressand“thebonnetwithitsrakishfeathers”,preenedherselfinfrontofalongmirror,“slippedintoherpiercedearsthediamondearrings”,took“AuntPitty’slittlesealmuff”andhid“herbarehandsinit”.Untill“shelookedprettyandprovocative”,andnoonewouldsuspect“thatpovertyandwantwerestandingonhershoulder”,didshesetout.ShewantedtomadeRhettthinkonlythe“tenderfeelingsweredrivingher”toseehim.

B.Scarlett’sBrave

Scarlett’sspiritandstruggleinfacingadversitiesisreallyencouraging.WhenshereturnedtoTara,todeadEllenandtosenileGerald,shewasindeedtheheroine,atgrips,atdeathgripswithlifeinraw.Thisbrave,unfeatableScarlettrepresentedsomethingofawishfulfillmentforusall.Forheresheis,standingstoutlyonherownfeet,thoughherwholewouldcrashesaroundher,andthensettingherselfdoggedlytoitsrebuilding,askingnooddsoffate.Scarletthaslifeinherself,whateverelsesheis,alwayssheisvital.Lifepressesonus;itscomplexityconfusesus;itstragedyappallsus.Toooftenweyield,butsomeofusstillhavemanhoodenoughtowishthatwedidn’t,toknowthatweshouldn’t,andtoadmiresomeone,evenacharacterinabook,whodoesnot.She’sgoingtosurviveanytime,andliveinanyreaders’heart.Foraslongaslifeisachallengewhichmenmusthavecouragetomeet,thefightingO’Harawhowouldn’tsaydieisgoingtolive.

TherehastobealittlebitofScarlettO’Harainpeoplewhocomethroughadversities.Besidesherfortitudestatedaboveinfightingdifficultiesfromwithout.herstrategyincopingwithtroublesfromwithinisalsoworthyremembering.

Scarlettisbestdescribedbyhercontrasttohermother,EllenO’Hara.Toherdaughter.

Scarlettwasveryindependent.Infactafterthedeathathermotherandthebreakdownofhermother,sheneverdependedonanotherhumanbeingotherthanherself.InherfirstreturntoTarafromAtlanta,Scarlettintendedtobebackunderherparentscare.Butwhenshearrivedhomeshefoundeverythingchanged:

Motherdied,Fatherbrokedown,Sisterswereseriousill,”moneyanddarkiesandsecurityandpositionhadvanishedovernight.”Sheknewthatwhethershelikeditornot,shehadtheplantationsandallitspeopleonhertwoinexperiencedhands.Therewasnooneforhertodependon.

EvenwhenshemarriedRhett,thebrave,wealthyandsmartandcouldofferhersecurity,shedidn’tdependonhim,asRhetttoldMelanie,“Youknowhowheadstrongsheis...shewon’tletmehelpher---shewon’tletanyonetohelpher.”

C.Scarlett’sPersistenceforLove

Whenthesixteen-year-oldScarlett,seatedinthecoolshadeoftheporchofTara,learnedthenewsofAshley’sengagement,“apainslashedatherheartassavagelyasawildanimalsfangs’.ShereallylovedhimsincethatdaytwoyearsagowhenAshley,whowasnewlyhomefromhistourinEurope,andlovedhimfromthatfirstinstantofthatdaywhensheheardhisdrawlingandmusicalvoiceof“you’vegrownup,Scarlett”withaleapingheart.

She“wantedhimassimplyandunreasoninglyasshewantedfoodtoeat,horsestorideandasoftbedonwhichtolayherself.”Butthereweresomanythingsabouthimthatshedidnotunderstand---hewascourteousalways,butaloof,remote.Noonecouldevertellwhathewasthinkingabo
