AnalysisofToday’sChineseYouthThrough“TheLostGeneration”inAmerica

Abstract

Nowadays,theChineseyouthareconsideredas“TheLostGeneration”,andtheyarebeingcriticizedbytheeldersallday,becausetheydoalotofperversethingsjustlike“TheLostGeneration”inAmericawhichtheelderscannotunderstand.Manyoftoday’sChineseyouthdothingstoopposethetradition,theyarebecomingmoreandmoreindifferentandapatheticandtheirdesireofbecomingfamousisstrongerthaneverbefore.Itseemsthattheyareveryhappyandtheydonotcareaboutanything,butactually,theyaredissatisfiedwiththeirlifeandthesocietyandsufferingalotintheirhearts.Butfewpeopleknowaboutthisandunderstandthem.Nowadays,gettingahouseandasatisfactoryjobaresodifficult;intheacquisitivesociety,moneybecomesmoreimportantthaneverbeforeandmoneyworshipisbecomingmoreandmorepopular;thereareunfairphenomenahereandthereinthesociety,whichmakepeoplehopeless;thelackofhonestymakespeopledifficulttotrusteachother,whichresultsinthefeelingofinsecurityofpeople;andpeoplearebecomingindifferentandapathetic.Thesocialenvironmentinfluencespeople’slifedeeply,sotheChineseyouthneedagoodsocialenvironment.But,peoplethemselvesarethemostimportantfactor.So,theChineseyouthmustdosomethingtohelpthemselves,too.Thispaperistotalkaboutthelifeoftoday’sChineseyouthbymakingacomparisonwith“TheLostGeneration”inAmerica,andthemethodsofimprovingthesituation.

摘 要

当今中国年轻一代被不少人称作“迷惘的一代”,他们也不断地受到老一辈人的批评,因

为他们就像美国一战后的“迷惘的一代”一样,行为另类,而他们的行为是老一辈人所不能理解的。

现在很多中国年轻人做出很多反传统的事情;变得越来越冷漠和麻木;成名的愿望空前强烈。

表面上他们逍遥快活,好像对什么事情都漠不关心,但实际上他们对自己的生活和社会都很不满意,内心也很痛苦。

但是没有多少人知道这一切,也没有多少人能够理解他们。

现在,买一套房子和找到一份满意的工作非常困难;在这个物欲横流的社会里,金钱似乎变得无比重要,拜金主义也变得非常流行;社会上到处都存在着不公平现象,这让人们对社会非常失望;诚信的缺乏也使人们很难相信彼此,人们丧失了安全感;变得越来越冷漠和麻木。

社会环境对人们的生活有着巨大的影响,所以当今中国年轻一代需要一个好的社会环境。

但是,最重要的因素还是他们自己,因此他们必须努力帮助自己。

本文通过把当今中国年轻一代与美国“迷惘的一代”作比较的方式来谈谈当今中国年轻一代的生活,以及如何改善他们的生活现状。

Introduction

ThereisaprograminHNTVnamedPortraitofChangeofLife,whichoncetoldastoryabouttwoboyswhoexchangedtheirlifedeliberately.OneisnamedWeiCheng—aboylivinginthecity,andtheotherisGaoZhanxi—aboylivinginthecountryside.Afteraweek’sexchangeoflife,bothofthemchangedalot.Duringtheexchange,WeiChengchangedfroma“lost”boytoawell-behavedboybecauseofthehardlifeinthecountryside.Inthepast,WeiChengdidnotlikestudy,spenttoomuchtimeontheInternet,didnotgetalongwellwithhisparents,didnotknowhislifegoalanddidnothaveanyidealatall.GaoZhanxistudiedhardandtreatedhisparentswell,afterhecametothecolorfulcity,hewas“lost”forsometime,buthefoundhimselfbackwhenheknewthatlifeinthecitywashardaswell.InChina,therearesomanyyoungpeoplejustliketheunchangedWeiCheng,someofwhomevendovariouscrazythings.Theyseekexcitements,dothingsagainstthetradition,lackfaith,laytoomuchstressonmateriallifeandsoon.Becauseoftheabove,somepeopleconsiderthemas“TheLostGeneration”.

Theterm‘TheLostGeneration’camefromanAmericanwomanwriternamedGertrudeStein(1874-1946),whohadlivedinParissince1903.Shewelcomedtheseyoungwriterstoherapartment,andgavethemencouragementandhelp.Shecalledtheseyoungwriters‘TheLostGeneration’bysayingtoamechanicinHemingway’spresencethat‘Youareallalostgeneration’. (DingYongshu,296)

Thepost-WorldWarIgenerationwasalsocollectivelycalled“TheLostGeneration”,andtheterminthispaperreferstothewholegeneration.

TheywereagenerationdevoidoffaithandalienatedfromacivilizationthatwastraditionallyAmerican.TheyfoundtheoldAmericawasgone,andtheysawinsteadalonely,dehumanized,mechanizedworld,inwhichtheyfelt,morestronglythanever,thattheywerenolongerboundtoeachotherbytraditionalstandardsofconductorbythestructureoftheirsociety.Theyhadasenseoffloatinginavoidasfragmentsofasocietythathadbeenblownintobitsandpiecesandwasnolongerwhole.Theirsisasenseofloneliness,alienation,andfragmentation. (DingYongshu,195)

TheChineseyouthareconsideredas“TheLostGeneration”becausetheirbehaviorissimilartothatof“TheLostGeneration”inAmerica.Althoughthistitlehasnotbeenpermittedbytheauthorityyet,noonecandenytheexistenceofthisphenomenoninthereallife.TheseperversethingsdonebytheChineseyouthjustreflecttheirdissatisfactionswiththesocietyandtheunhappinessintheirhearts.Theirpresentsituationisfarfromtheirsatisfactions,andbothsocietyandindividualsshouldmakeeffortstochangethesituation.

I.TheComparisonBetween“TheLostGeneration”inAmericaandToday’sChineseYouth

WhatIsaidintheabovecontentshowsthattheChineseyoutharesimilarto“TheLostGeneration”inAmerica.Now,Iwouldliketomakeacomparisonbetweenthesetwogenerations.

A. TheComparisonofTheirEpochBackground

1.TheEpochBackgroundof“TheLostGeneration”inAmerica

TheWorldWarItookplacein1914,andAmericaalsojoinedthewar.ManyyoungAmericansjoinedthewarbecausetheyweretoldbythegovernmentthatthewarwasjust.Theysawthecruelnessofthewar,boththeirbodiesandheartswerehurt,andtheyknewthattheywerecheated.

 

Greatchangestookplaceinthedecadefollowingthewar.Duringthisera,theAmericaneconomyexperiencedspectaculargrowthandthewholesocietyturnedintoagreedilyconsumingsociety.However,thewarchangedtheoutlookofallAmericansinverysignificantwaysandintensifiedtheirpessimismanddisenchantmentwithwhatwaspeculiarlyAmerican.Economically,theemphasisonmassproductionandGiantCorporationwidenedthegulfbetweentheworkersandtheiremployers.Manypeoplebecamedisillusionedwiththenation’spoliticallife,anddisgustedatthevigorousmaterialismofpost-warprosperity,andthenewfrivolous,greedy,heedlesswayoflifeintheearly1920’s. (DingYongshu,194)

Theycouldnotfindasuitablepositionforthemselves.Theyattemptedtopursueameaningfullife,butdidnotknowhowtomakeit.So,theydidasetofperversethingstoexpresstheirdissatisfactionsandhopelessness.

2.TheEpochBackgroundofToday’sChineseYouth

Chinahasbeendevelopingsteadilyinallaspectsinthepastyears.Now,itismoreprosperousandpowerful,andtheChinesepeopleareleadingabetterlife.Theeconomyisdevelopingsmoothly,evenfasterthanmanydevelopedcountriespeoplearebecomingricherandricher;thepoliticsisstable;themilitarystrengthisalsoattheleadingpositionintheworldandthecountryisinpeace.Generallyspeaking,thesituationisgood.However,Chinaisstillasocialistdevelopingcountryandtherearesomeunavoidableproblems.Forexample,thedemocraticsystemisnotfully-developed;thegapbetweentherichandthepooriswiderandwider;corruptionisrampantandsoon.Whatismore,manynewthingshavebeenbroughtintoChinafromothercountries,includingthegoodandthebad,sincethepolicyofreformationandopeninghasbeencarriedout.ThishasinfluencedChineseconventiongreatly.ManyoftheChineseyouthbecome“lost”insuchasociety.

B.TheComparisonofTheirBehavior

1.TheBehaviorof“TheLostGeneration”inAmerica

a.OpposingtheTradition

AftertheWorldWarI,greatchangestookplaceinAmerica.Americanpeople“foundtheoldAmericawasgone,andtheysawinsteadalonely,dehumanized,mechanizedworld,inwhichtheyfelt,morestronglythanever,thattheywerenolongerboundtoeachotherbytraditionalstandardsofconductorbythestructureoftheirsociety”.(DingYongshu,195)Theyfoundthatthetraditionalstandardsofconductwereoutofdateandtheycouldgainnothinggoodfollowingsuchstandardsinthechangedworld.Theydidnotheartheirparentstobegentlemenbutdidthingstoopposeallthetraditionalthings.Buttheydidnotknowtheaimsofthesethings. 

b.DistortionofValues

Thecruelwarchangedthewholeworld,andtheoldvalueswerealsoruined.InthemechanizednewAmerica,allofthepeoplewereaftermoney,becauseitseemedthatmoneycouldbringthemeverything,includingthehappinessandlove.Theybelievedthatmoneywasaboveall.Ifonehadmuchmoney,peoplewouldtreathimwellandrespecthimsomuch.Whenawomanchoseahusband,shewouldchoosearichman,whichwasaprecondition.Itseemedthatwhattheyneededwasnotahusbandbutmoney.Theyalmostconsideredmoneyasthemostimportantthing.IwouldliketotakeTheGreatGatsbyofF.ScottFitzgeraldforexample.Gatsbytriedhisbesttoearnmoney,becausehethoughtthathecouldregainDaisyifhehadenoughmoney.Buthewaswrong,moneycouldnotbuylove.Atlast,Daisylefthimandhediedbecauseofher.Whenhewasrich,manypeoplegotclosetohimandshowedtheirrespectforhim,whichwasnotreal;butwhenhedied,evennobodywaswillingtoattendhisfuneral.So,wecanseethatmoneyisnotalmighty.Althoughitisanovel,itpresentsthewholepost-warAmericatous.

c.BeingDisgustedwiththeHopelessSocietyandTheirLife,andTryingtoHideTheirInnerVoidbyIndulgingThemselves

Atthebeginning,peoplethoughtthattheycouldregainthepeacefullifewhenthewarwasover.Buttheyfoundthatthewholesocietyhadbeenchanged.Theycouldnotadaptthemselvestothenewsociety.Peopledidnottrusteachotheranymore,andtheyjustcaredaboutthemselves.So,peopleweredisgustedwiththehopelesssocietyandtheirlif
