Manyofyouwillprobablywonderwhatthisbookisallabout.WhatisinthisbookthatmadeitsoimportantinancientChina?

    DiZiGui,inEnglish,meansstandardsforbeingagoodstudentandchild.ItisanancientChinesebookhandeddowntousfromancientChineseSaintsandsages.ThesourcefortheoutlineofthisbookwasselectedfromAnalectsofConfucius,Book1,Chapter6,whereConfuciussaid:

    SincethemainoutlineofthisbookisbasedontheteachingsofConfucius,letusfindoutwhoheis.ConfuciuswasagreatChinesescholar,teacherandeducator.HewasborninChinaabouttwenty-fivehundredyearsago,aboutthesametimethatShakyamuniBuddhawasborninIndia.ConfuciusdeeplyinfluencedChineseculture,andthisinfluenceextendsthroughouttheworldeventoday.Hebelievedthatmoralprinciples,virtues,anddisciplineshouldbetheveryfirstlessonstobetaughttoachild,andthatachildneedstopracticethemdaily.Unlikemoderndayparentswhodisapproveofphysicalpunishment,ancientChineseparentsactuallyencouragedandthankedtheteacherwhentheirchildrenwerepunishedformisbehaving.ItwasmostimportanttoancientChineseparentsthattheirchildrenlearnedthemoralprinciplesandvirtuesfirst,beforeanyothersubject,becausewithoutmoralprinciplesandvirtuesasafoundation,thelearningofallothersubjectswouldbefutile.

    ThesequenceofancientChineseeducationalsystembasedontheConfucianteachingsisasfollows:

    IfyouaskastudentwhofollowsConfucianteachingswhetherheorshecanexplaininashortsentencewhatConfucianteachingsareallabout,thestudentwilltellyouthis:
