AlbertEinstein.AftertalkingwithEinstein,inAugust1939SzilardwrotealettertoPresidentRooseveltwithEinstein'ssignatureonit,whichwasdeliveredtoRooseveltinOctober1939.

GermanyhasinvadedPolandthepreviousmonth;thetimewasripeforaction.ThatOctoberresearchofabombbeganbutproceededslowlybecausetheinventionoftheatomicbombseemeddistantandunlikely.InApril1940anEinsteinletter,ghostwrittenbySzilard,pressedtheresearchersontheneedfor“greaterspeed”.

Astherealizationofnuclearweaponsgrewnear,Einsteinlookedbeyondthecurrentwartofutureproblemsthatsuchweaponscouldbring.Hewrotetohisfriendabouthisfearaboutthefutureuseoftheabomb.

TheatomicbombingsofJapanoccurredthreemonthsafterGermanygavein.

InNovember1954,fivemonthsbeforehisdeath,Einsteinsummarizedhisfeelingsabouthisroleinthecreationoftheatomicbomb:
