Themovementstemmedfromtheearliercivilrightsmovements.Itrepresentedracialdignityandselfreliance(i.e.freedomfromwhiteauthorityinbotheconomicandpoliticalarenas).

SomeAfricanAmericanssoughtculturalheritageandhistoryandthetruerootsofblackidentityastheirpartofthemovement.
