ErnestHemingway(1899-1961)

AsoneofthemostfamousAmericannovelists,shortstorywritersandessayists,Hemingwaywasawardedthe1954NobelPrizeforLiterature.Hisdeceptivelysimpleprosestylehasinfluencedawiderangeofwriters.HisseriousnovelTheSunAlsoRisesappearedin1926.ThenoveldealswithagroupofexpatriatesinFranceandSpain,membersofthedisillusionedpost-WorldWarILostGeneration.Itbecamehisfirstgreatsuccessasanovelist.

TheOldManandtheSea,publishedfirstinLifemagazinein1952,againrestoredhisfame.The27,000wordnovellatoldastoryofanoldCubanfishermannamedSantiago,whofinallycatchesagiantmarlinafterweeksofnotcatchinganything.Ashereturnstotheharbor,thesharkseatthefishlashedtohisboat.

OnJuly2,1961,Hemingwaycommittedsuicidewithhisfavoriteshotgunathishome.

RobertFrost(1874-1963)

AsoneofAmerica’sleading20th-centurypoetsandafour-timewinnerofthePulitzerPrize,Frostwrotepoemswhosephilosophicaldimensionstranscendanyregion.Hispoetryisthusbothtraditionalandexperimental,regionalanduniversal.Heunquestionablysucceededinrealizinghislife’sambition:

towrite“afewpoemswheretheywillbehardtogetridof.”

PierreAugusteRenoir(1841-1919)

RenoirwasafamousFrenchpainter,andoneofthefoundersandexponentsoftheImpressionistMovement.Hisworksarecharacterizedbyanextraordinaryrichnessoffeelings,warmthofresponsetotheworldandthepeopleinit.Renoironcesaid:

“Whyshouldn’tartbepretty?

Thereareenoughunpleasantthingsintheworld.”

StevenSpielberg(1946-)

HehaseverbeenperhapsHollywood’sbest-knowndirectorandoneofthewealthiestfilmmakersintheworld,andalsooneofthemostinfluentialfilmpersonalitiesinthehistoryoffilm.Spielberghasdirectedorproducedmanyofthetop-grossingfilmsinHollywoodhistory,includingE.T.:

LudwigvanBeethoven(1770-1827)

BeethovenisaGermancomposer,universallyrecognizedasoneofthegreatestcomposersoftheWesternEuropeanmusictradition.Beethoven’sworkscrownedtheclassicalperiodandalsoeffectivelyinitiatedtheromanticerainmusic.HisastonishingThirdSymphony(1803)wasthethunderclapthatannouncedtheromanticcentury,anditembodiesthetitanicbutrigorouslycontrolledenergythatwasthehallmarkofhisstyle.

OscarWilde(1854-1900)

HewasanIrishplaywright,novelist,poet,andshortstorywriter.Knownforhiswitandflamboyance,hewasoneofthemostsuccessfulplaywrightsoflateVictorianLondon,andoneofthegreatestcelebritiesofhisday.Astheresultofafamoustrial,hesufferedadramaticdownfallandwasimprisonedfortwoyearsofhardlaborafterbeingconvictedofthehomosexualoffences.
