ThePreparationOutline
Thepreparationoutlineisjustwhatitsnameimplies--anoutlinethathelpsyoupreparethespeech.Writingapreparationoutlinemeansactuallyputtingyourspeechtogether.Itisthestageatwhichyoudecidewhatyouwillsayintheintroduction,howyouwillorganizethemainpointsandsupportingmaterialsinthebodyofthespeech,andwhatyouwillsayintheconclusion.
Nowletuslookattheguidelinesfortheoutline.Thespecificpurposestatementshouldbeaseparateunitthatcomesbeforethetextoftheoutlineitself.Includingthespecificpurposeintheoutlinemakesiteasiertoassesshowwellyouhaveconstructedthespeechtoaccomplishyourpurpose.Someteacherspreferthatthecentralideabegivenimmediatelyafterthepurposestatement.Otherspreferthatitbegivenandidentifiedinthetextoftheoutlineitself.Ifyoulabelthepartsofyourspeech,youwillbesurethatyouindeedhaveanintroductionandconclusionandhaveaccomplishedtheessentialobjectivesofeach.Usuallythenames
ofthespeechpartsareplacedinthemiddleofthepageorinthefarleftmargin.Theyaretechnicallabelsonlyandarenotincludedinthesystemofsymbolizationusedtoidentifymainpointsandsupportingmaterials.Inthemostcommonsystemofoutlining,themainpointsareidentifiedbyRomannumeralsandareindentedequallysoastobealigneddownthepage.Sub-pointsareidentifiedbycapitallettersandarealsoindentedequallysoastobealignedwitheachother.

Yourspeakingoutlineshouldusethesamevisualframework——thesamesymbolsandthesamepatternofindentation--asyourpreparationoutline.Thiswillmakeitmucheasiertopreparethespeakingoutline.Moreimportant,itwillallowyoutoseeinstantlywhereyouareinthespeechatanygivenmomentwhileyouarespeaking.Yourspeakingoutlineisallbutworthlessunlessitisinstantlyreadableatdistance.Whenyoumakeyouroutline,usedarklinkandlargelettering,leaveextraspacebetween1ines,provideamplemargins,andwriteortypeononesideofthepaperonly.Ifyournotesaretoodetailed,youwillhavedifficultymaintainingeyecontactwithyouraudience.Toguardagainsthavingtoomanynotes,keep
