However,throughoutthistimeIdidinasenseengageinliteraryactivities.Tobeginwiththerewasthemade-to-orderstuffwhichIproducedquickly,easilyandwithoutmuchpleasuretomyself.Apartfromschoolwork,Iwroteversd'occasion,semi-comicpoemswhichIcouldturnoutatwhatnowseemstomeastonishingspeed—atfourteenIwroteawholerhymingplay,inimitationofAristophanes,inaboutaweek—andhelpedtoeditaschoolmagazines,bothprintedandinmanuscript.Thesemagazineswerethemostpitifulburlesquestuffthatyoucouldimagine,andItookfarlesstroublewiththemthanInowwouldwiththecheapestjournalism.Butsidebysidewithallthis,forfifteenyearsormore,Iwascarryingoutaliteraryexerciseofaquitedifferentkind:

thiswasthemakingupofacontinuous‘story’aboutmyself,asortofdiaryexistingonlyinthemind.Ibelievethisisacommonhabitofchildrenandadolescents.AsaverysmallchildIusedtoimaginethatIwas,say,RobinHood,andpicturemyselfastheheroofthrillingadventures,butquitesoonmy‘story’ceasedtobenarcissisticinacrudewayandbecamemoreandmoreameredescriptionofwhatIwasdoingandthethingsIsaw.Forminutesatatimethiskindofthingwouldberunningthroughmyhead:

‘Hepushedthedooropenandenteredtheroom.Ayellowbeamofsunlight,filteringthroughthemuslincurtains,slantedontothetable,whereamatch-box,half-open,laybesidetheinkpot.Withhisrighthandinhispockethemovedacrosstothewindow.Downinthestreetatortoiseshellcatwaschasingadeadleaf’,etc.etc.ThishabitcontinueduntilIwasabouttwenty-five,rightthroughmynon-literaryyears.AlthoughIhadtosearch,anddidsearch,fortherightwords,Iseemedtobemakingthisdescriptiveeffortalmostagainstmywill,underakindofcompulsionfromoutside.The‘story’must,Isuppose,havereflectedthestylesofthevariouswritersIadmiredatdifferentages,butsofarasIrememberitalwayshadthesamemeticulousdescriptivequality.

WhenIwasaboutsixteenIsuddenlydiscoveredthejoyofmerewords,i.e.thesoundsandassociationsofwords.ThelinesfromParadiseLost—

whichdonotnowseemtomesoverywonderful,sentshiversdownmybackbone;andthespelling‘hee’for‘he’wasanaddedpleasure.Asfortheneedtodescribethings,Iknewallaboutitalready.SoitisclearwhatkindofbooksIwantedtowrite,insofarasIcouldbesaidtowanttowritebooksatthattime.Iwantedtowriteenormousnaturalisticnovelswithunhappyendings,fullofdetaileddescriptionsandarrestingsimiles,andalsofullofpurplepassagesinwhichwordswereusedpartlyforthesakeoftheirownsound.Andinfactmyfirstcompletednovel,BurmeseDays,whichIwrotewhenIwasthirtybutprojectedmuchearlier,isratherthatkindofbook.

Igiveallthisbackground information becauseIdonotthinkonecanassessawriter'smotiveswithoutknowingsomethingofhisearlydevelopment.Hissubjectmatterwillbedeterminedbytheagehelivesin—atleastthisistrueintumultuous,revolutionaryageslikeourown—butbeforeheeverbeginstowritehewillhaveacquiredanemotionalattitudefromwhichhewillnevercompletelyescape.Itishisjob,nodoubt,todisciplinehistemperamentandavoidgettingstuckatsomeimmaturestage,insomeperversemood;butifheescapesfromhisearlyinfluencesaltogether,hewillhavekilledhisimpulsetowrite.Puttingasidetheneedtoearnaliving,Ithinktherearefourgreatmotivesforwriting,atanyrateforwritingprose.Theyexistindifferentdegreesineverywriter,andinanyonewritertheproportionswillvaryfromtimetotime,accordingtotheatmosphereinwhichheisliving.Theyare:

(i)Sheeregoism.Desiretoseemclever,tobetalkedabout,toberememberedafterdeath,togetyourownbackonthegrown-upswhosnubbedyouinchildhood,etc.,etc.Itishumbugtopretendthisisnotamotive,andastrongone.Writerssharethis characteristicwithscientists,artists,politicians,lawyers,soldiers,successfulbusinessmen—inshort,withthewholetopcrustofhumanity.Thegreatmassofhumanbeingsarenotacutelyselfish.Aftertheageofaboutthirtytheyalmostabandonthesenseofbeingindividualsatal
