Theoilresourceswhichareleftwillnotlastverylong.Thismeansthatallvehiclessuchascars,trains,buses,planesandshipsthatneedoiltoworkwillnotbeabletorun.Soitwillbenecessarytodevelopanewsystemoftransportwhichusesafuelmorethanoil.Electricvehiclesareonepossibility.InBritain,mostfamilieshaveatleastonecarandthiscarisusedeveryday.Itcouldbethatonlyonepersoninthefamilydrivesthecartoworkorforshopping.Thenumberofcarsontheroadwhicharealmostemptyperhapshelpstoexplainwhytheoilisusedupsoquickly.Thefamilycarisaveryusefulformoftransportbutitisalsoagreatwasteofenergy,especiallyifitiscomparedwithbusesortrains.Muchpetrolisusedbyacarwhichistravelingat120kilometersanhour.Clearly,itwouldbebetteriftherewerefewercarsontheroadandmorespeedlimitssothattheoilwhichisleftwilllastaslongaspossible.

About25%ofBritain’stotalconsumptionofenergyisdomestic—itisusedonlyinthehome.Justover20%isusedfortransport.Mostoftheenergyisusedinindustry.Itisdifficulttosuggestanypossibleenergyconservationinindustrybecausemanyofthesuggestionswouldmeanthatsomepeoplewouldlosetheirjobs.Itisimportantthatindustryproducesthesameamountofproductsusingthesameamountofworkers.
