AsfrontiersettlementexpandedrapidlyaftertheRevolution,moreopportunitiesforcriminalsopened.Twocommontypesofbanditswerehighwaymenandriverpirates.Highwaymenaccosted(搭讪)peoplewhotraveledonfootorhorseback,whileriverpiratespreyedupontheboattrafficontheOhio,Mississippi,andotherrivers.Somebanditsengagedinboth.

CriminalityintheWestgatheredmomentum(势头)withthegoldrushestoCalifornia,Idaho,Montana,Nevada,andotherstates.Stagecoachesandtrainscarryinggoldandmoneybecameprimetargetsforbandsofoutlaws.BankrobberiesemergedaftertheCaliforniaGoldRushof1849andasprosperityfounditswaytofrontiertowns.Thefirststagerobberywasrecordedin1851,andthefirsttrainrobberyhappenedin1866.
