2.Thanksgiving

1)Introduction

ThanksgivingiscelebratedintheUSonthefourthThursdayinNovember.FormanyAmericansitisthemostimportantholidayapartfromChristmas.Schools,officesandmostbusinessescloseforThanksgiving,andmanypeoplemakethewholeweekendavacation.ThewriterO.HenrycalledittheonedaythatispurelyAmerican.Theholidayisatimeoffamilyreunion.

2)Origin

ThanksgivingisassociatedwiththetimewhenEuropeansfirstcametoNorthAmerica.In1620theshiptheMayflowerarrived,bringingabout150peoplewhotodayareusuallycalledPilgrims.Theyarrivedatthebeginningofaveryhardwinterandcouldnotfindenoughtoeat,somanyofthemdied.ButinthefollowingsummerNativeAmericansshowedthemwhatfoodsweresafetoeat,sothattheycouldsavefoodforthenextwinter.TheyheldabigcelebrationtothankGodandtheNativeAmericansforthefactthattheyhadsurvived.

3)SpecialMeal

TodaypeoplecelebrateThanksgivingtoremembertheseearlydays.ThemostimportantpartofthecelebrationisatraditionaldinnerwithfoodsthatcomefromNorthAmerica.Themealincludesturkey,sweetpotatoes(alsocalledyams)andcranberries,whicharemadeintoakindofsauceorjelly.Theturkeyisfilledwithstuffingordressing,andmanyfamilieshavetheirownspecialrecipe.Dessertispumpkinmadeintoapie.

4)Celebrations

OnThanksgivingtherearespecialtelevisionprogramsandsportsevents.AnumberofprofessionalanduniversityfootballgamesareplayedonThanksgivingDay.InNewYorkthereistheMacy’sThanksgivingDayParade,whenalonglineofpeoplewearingfancycostumesmarchthroughthestreetswithlargeballoonsintheshapeofimaginarycharacters.ThanksgivingisconsideredthebeginningoftheChristmasperiod,andthenextdaymanypeoplegoouttoshopforChristmaspresents.

3.ThePilgrims

Thepilgrimswerethe102EnglishpeoplewhosailedtoAmericaontheMayflowerin1620.Theirgroupincluded35PuritanswhoseaimwastocreateasafereligiouscommunityintheNewWorld.ThePilgrimsprobablylandedatPlymouthRock,andtheyestablishedPlymouthcolony.

4.NativeAmericans

NativeAmericanswerelivinginNorthAmericaformanyhundredsofyearsbeforeEuropeansreachedthecontinent.ForalongtimewhitepeoplecalledthemIndians.Todaymanypeopledonotlikethisnamesinceitisbasedonamistake:

itwasgiventothepeoplelivingintheAmericabyChristopherColumbus,who,whenhearrivedthere,thoughthehadlandedinIndia.Instead,peopleprefertousethetermNativeAmericans.

5.TheUnitedStatesCoastGuard

TheUnitedStatesCoastGuardistheUSmilitaryservicethatiscontrolledbytheUSDepartmentofTransportationbutbecomespartoftheUSNavyduringawar.Itwasestablishedin1915.TheCoastGuardstopsshipssuspectedofcarryingdrugsandotherillegalgoods,andcanmakearrests.Italsokeepswatchtoseethatotherlawsoftheseaareobeyed,rescuesshipsindangerandhasaweatherservice.
