《百万英镑》的创作背景

小说《百万英镑》中的那个年轻人，恰是马克·吐温的真实写照，他在美国内华达州“淘金热”股票泡沫中的经历，堪称屡战屡败，屡炒屡输，最终只能“不做那没影儿的发财梦，死心塌地奔自己的前程”。

在内华达州，马克·吐温曾是弗吉尼亚城中的一名记者，这座城市也是内华达州盛产黄金、白银的地区。

在“淘金热”下，马克·吐温也未能免俗，而且他对传言和新的机会都十分敏感。

当时，不少已经发现了黄金、白银矿山的矿主们正在纽约城出售他们的股票，以筹集资金，于是马克·吐温将自己的所有积蓄，甚至全部稿酬都投入到了购买白银矿山的股票中。

在购买之初，作为一名新闻记者，马克·吐温的耳目相当灵敏。

他长期看好黄金、白银的走势，但他同时告诉自己，只要满足以下两个条件之一，就应该卖出股票：

或市值达到10万美元（这在当时是笔巨款），或内华达州选民批准了州宪法，马克·吐温认为这将损害白银矿山的长期价值。

随着股票的快速上涨，很快，马克·吐温便“退休”了，他不再从事新闻记者的工作。

看着节节攀升的股价，他觉得自己非常富有，且十分满足，于是他来到旧金山，过起了奢华的生活。

甚至在内华达变成一个州并通过州宪法后，马克·吐温依旧持有着他的股票，这恰恰和他的计划完全相反。

但突然有一天，和20世纪末那场互联网泡沫一样，市场对白银股票的狂热消失了，股价飞流直下，马克·吐温就和《百万英镑》中的那个年轻人一样，变得身无分文，甚至接近破产。

迫于生计，马克·吐温只能重操旧业。

为了偿还债务，他被迫继续工作，并留下《百万英镑》等文学作品。
