theprincipalmountainsofSouthAmericaandoneofthegreatestmountainsystemsoftheworld.TheAndesincludesomeoftheworld'shighestpeaks.Morethan50ofthemsoarhigherthan6,100m(20,000ft)abovesealevel.OnlytheHimalayasofsouthcentralAsiaarehigher.TheloftyplateausandhighmountainvalleysoftheAndescontainsomeofthehighestpermanenthumansettlementsintheworld.TheAndesarethelongestsystemofhighmountainrangesonearth.Theyextendformorethan8000km(5000mi)inanarrowbeltalongthewesternedgeoftheSouthAmericancontinent,fromthecoastoftheCaribbeanSeainthenorthtotheislandofTierradelFuegointheextremesouth.Alongalmostitsentirelength,theAndesriseabruptlyfromthePacificcoast.Themountainsreachintosevencountries:
