TheLumièrebrothers,AugusteandLouis,weresonofwell-knownartistAntoineLumière.BothofthemhadanaturaltalentforscienceandwereeducatedatLyon’slargesttechnicalschool,LaMartiniere.

Thebrothersworkedthroughthewinterof1894.TheyrecognizedtwomainproblemswithEdison’sinvention:
theKinetographwasalargepieceofmachinery,whichresignedittotheworkroom;theviewer(底片看片器)meantthatonlyonepersoncouldexperiencethefilmsatatime.Withinayear,theCinematographewasborn.Itwasmuchsmallerandcouldbeviewedbylargeraudiences.
