独在异乡为异客,每逢佳节倍思亲。

不登高山,不知天之高也;不临深渊,不知地之厚也。

不闻不若闻之,闻之不若见之,见之不若知之,知之不若行之。

学之于行之而止

人有悲欢离合,月有阴晴圆缺,此事古难全。

人之于文学也,犹玉之于琢磨也。

Leaningandculturearetoapersonwhatpolishedandgrindingaretojade.

三人行,必有我师焉。

择其善者而行之,其不善者而改之。

Amonganythreepeoplewalking,Iwillfindsomethingtolearnforsure.Theirgoodqualitiesaretobefollowed,andtheirshortcomingsaretobeavoided.

善学者,假人之长而补其短。

Thosewhoarekeeninleaningtakeotherpeople’sfortstomakeuptheirowndefects.善学者尽其理,善行者究其难。

Thosewhoaregoodatexhausttheprinciples.Thosewhoaregoodatpracticingseektosolvethemostdifficultproblems.

士不可以不弘毅,任重而道远。

仁以为己任,不亦重乎?

死而后己,不亦远乎?

Aneducatedgentlemancannotbutberesoluteandbroad-minded,forhehastakenupaheavyresponsibilityandalongcourse.Isitnotaheavyresponsibility,whichistopracticebenevolence?

Isitnotalongcourse,whichwillendonlywithhisdeath?

士之为人,当理不避其难,临患忘利,遗生行义,视死如归。

Amoralintellectualisonewhoescapesnodangerinfaceoftruth,discardspersonalinterestsinfrontofdisaster,practicesrighteousnessattheexpenseoflife,andlooksdeathasgoinghome.

逝者如斯夫!

不舍昼夜。

Thepassageoftimeisjustliketheflowofwater,whichgoesindayandnight.

水火有气而无生,草木有生而无知,禽兽有知而无义;人有气,有生,有知,亦且有义,故最为天下贵也。

Fireandwaterpossessaspiritbutnolife,grassandtreespossessalifebutnoawareness,birdsandanimalspossessawarenessbutnosenseofmorality.Onlyhumanspossessspirit,life,awareness,aswellasthesenseofmorality,hencethenoblestbeingsintheworld.

顺天者存,逆天者亡。

ThosewhofollowtheHeaven’slawwillsurvive;thosewhogoagainstitwillperish.
