“ThemostimportantdayIrememberinallmylifeistheoneonwhichmyteacher,AnneMansfieldSullivan,cametome.IamfilledwithwonderwhenIconsidertheimmeasurable(无限的)contrastsbetweenthetwoliveswhichitconnects.ItwasthethirdofMarch,1887,threemonthsbeforeIwassevenyearsold.”sowroteHelenKeller.
Themorningafterthearrivalofherteacher,Helenwasledintoaroomandgivenadoll.Aftershehadplayedwithitforawhile,MissSullivanslowlyspelttheletters“doll”intoherhand.AtonceHelenwasinterestedinthisfingerplayandtriedtoimitateherteacher.Whenshefinallysucceededinformingtheletterscorrectly,shewasfilledwithpleasureandpride.Excitedlyshefoundherwaytohermother,heldupherhandandwrotethelettersfor“doll”.Andinthedaysthatfollowed,shelearnedtospellagreatmanywordsinthisway.
Helensoonlearned,however,thatthingsandactionshadnames.Onedaywhenshewasplayingwithhernewdoll,MissSullivanplacedthedollonherlap,madehertouchitagainandwrotetheletters“doll”onthepalm(手掌)ofherhand.ThiswasrepeatedseveraltimesuntilHelenassociatedthewordwiththeobject.
“Once,aswewerewalkingdowntheroadtothewell,Iwasattractedbysomestrangesmellintheair.Iasked,‘Whatisthatstrangesmellintheair?
’MissSullivanledmetothewell.Someonewasdrawingwater.Shetookmyhandandplaceditundertheflowingwater.”AsthecoolwaterwashedHelen'shand,MissSullivanspelttheword“water”intoherotherhand,firstslowly,thenquickly.Helenstoodstill.Sheknewthenthat“water”meantthecoolliquidshewasnowplayingwithbothherhands.Thatlivingwordgaveherjoy,lightandhope.Shedidnotrememberwhattheyallwere;butsheknewthatmother,father,sister,andherteacherwereamongthem—wordsthatweretomaketheworldbrightforher.Ashereducationprogressed,Helenwaslivinganewlifefullofexcitement.Shenowhadthekeytolanguageandwaskeentouseit.
Wewhohaveeyestoseeandearstohearcanlearneasily.ButHelencouldnotasshewasbothblindanddeaf.Shedidnotallowherselftobehandicapped(身体残疾的).Shemadefulluseofalltheotherfacultiesshehadtosuchanadvantagethatshebecameaworldfamousteacheroftheblindandthedeaf.
