  Lifelearning(sometimescalledun-schoolingorself-directedlearning)isoneofthoseconceptsthatarealmosteasiertoexplainbysayingwhatitisn’t,thanwhatitis.Andthat’sprobablybecauseourownschooledbackgroundshaveconvincedusthatlearninghappensonlyinadedicatedbuildingoncertaindays,betweencertainhours,andmanagedbyaspeciallytrainedprofessional.

  Withinthatschoolingframework,nomatterhowhardteacherstryandnomatterhowgoodtheirtextbooks,manybrightstudentsgetbored,manyslowerstudentsstruggleandgiveuporlosetheirself-respect,andmostofthemreachtheendoftheprocessunpreparedtoenterintosociety.Theyhavememorizedacertainbodyofknowledgelongenoughtorushbacktheinformationontests,buttheyhaven’treallylearntmuch,atleastoftheofficialcurriculum.
