ScoringGuide

SATWritingessaysarescoredbyexperiencedhighschoolteachersandcollegefacultymemberswhoprimarilyteachEnglish,composition,orlanguageartscourses,orwhoteachacourseinanothersubjectthatrequiresasubstantialamountofwriting.

Eachessaywillbescoredindependentlybytwoqualifiedreadersonascaleof1to6,with6beingthehighestscore.Thecombinedscoreforbothreaderswillrangefrom2to12.Ifthetworeaders'scoresaremorethanonepointapart,athirdreaderresolvesthediscrepancy.

Evenwithsomeerrorsinspelling,punctuation,andgrammar,youcanstillgetatopscoreontheessay.Theessaywillbescoredusingaholisticapproach.Thatmeansreaderswillconsidertheessayasatotalpieceofworkandwilljudgeitontheoverallimpressionitproduces.Handwritingwillnotcountagainstyou,butessayreadersmustbeabletoreadyourwritinginordertoscoreyouressay,soyoushouldtrytowritelegibly.
