Theenduringimageinthepublic'smindofthemysteriousheadsonEasterIslandissimplythat-heads.

Soitcomesasquiteashocktoseetheheadsfromanotherangle-anddiscoverthattheyhavefullbodies,extendingdownmany,manyfeetintothegroundoftheisland.

TheEasterIslandStatueProjecthasbeencarefullyexcavatingtwoof1,000-plusstatuesontheislands-doingtheirbesttouncoverthesecretsofthemysteriousstones,andthepeoplewhobuiltthem.

InsidetheEasterIslandstatues:

Expertshaveknownaboutthebodiesbefore,butwhentheseimagesstartedcirculatingreadersdoubtedtheirauthenticity

Theteamalsofoundlargequantitiesofredpigment,someofwhichmayhavebeenusedtopaintthestatues

ProjectdirectorJoAnneVanTilburgsaid:

'OurEISPexcavationsrecentlyexposedthetorsosoftwo7mtallstatues.

'Hundreds,perhapsthousands,ofvisitorstotheislandhavebeenastonishedtoseethat,indeed,EasterIslandstatueshavebodies!

'Moreimportant,however,wediscoveredagreatdealabouttheRapaNuitechniquesofancientengineering.'

Amongtheirdiscoveries,theteamhavediscovered:

∙Thedirtanddetrituspartiallyburyingthestatueswaswasheddownfromaboveandnotdeliberatelyplacedtheretobury,protect,orsupportthestatues

∙Thestatueswereerectedinplaceandstandonstonepavements

∙Postholeswerecutintobedrocktosupportuprighttreetrunks

∙Ropeguideswerecutintobedrockaroundthepostholes

∙Posts,ropes,stones,anddifferenttypesofstonetoolswereallusedtocarveandraisethestatuesupright

Theremoteisland-oneoftheremotestintheworld,tuckedawayintheSouthPacificOcean-wasoncehometoaPolynesianpopulation,whosehistoryremainsmysterious.

Theylikelysailedtotheislandsincanoes-a1,500-milejourneyovertheopenwaters,andthen,oncetheylanded,theybeganrelentesslycarvingthestonestatues.

Thisledtotheirowndownfall:

BythetimeEuropeansdiscoveredtheislandinthe1700s,thepopulationhaddecimatednearlyallthetreesintheislandtohelpwiththestatueconstruction,andtheknock-oneffectontheisland'secologyledtotheirdecline.

Theteamworkingonthedigastheyunveilthesecretsoftheheads-excavationsrecentlyexposedthetorsosoftwo7mtallstatues

Theteamalsodiscoveredthatceremonieswerecertainlyassociatedwiththestatues.

Ontheprojectwebsite,VanTilburgsaid:

'Wefoundlargequantitiesofredpigment,someofwhichmayhavebeenusedtopaintthestatues.

'Finally,andperhapsmostpoignantly,wefoundinthepavementunderonestatueasinglestonecarvedwithacrescentsymbolsaidtorepresentacanoe,orvaka.

'Thebacksofbothstatuesarecoveredwithpetroglyphs,manyofwhicharealsovaka.Adirectconnectionbetweenthevakasymbolandtheidentityoftheartistorgroupowningthestatueisstronglysuggested.'
