Thebuildingrestsonaplatformofredsandstone.Fourthinwhitetowers,orminarets,risefromthecornersoftheplatform.Alargedomerisesfromthecenterofthebuilding.Aroundthislargedometherearefoursmallerdomes.Thebuildingismadeoffinewhitemarblewithinlaysofcoloredmarble.Ithaseightsidesandmanyopenarches.Thereisanopencorridorjustinsidetheouterwalls.Fromthiscorridorthevisitorlooksthroughcarvedmarblescreenstoacentralroom.ThebodiesofShahJehanandhiswifelieinatombbelowthisroom.Theentiremausoleumisdecoratedwithinlaiddesignofflowersandcalligraphyusingpreciousgems.Themainarchwaysgiveacaptivatingcharmtoitsbeauty.ThecentraldomedchamberandfouradjoiningchambersincludemanywallsandpanelsofIslamicdecoration.Themausoleumisapartofavastxxplexxxprisingofamaingateway,anelaborategarden,amosque,aguesthouse,andseveralotherpalatialbuildings.Thelargegardencontainsfourreflectingpoolsdividingitatthecenter.Eachofthesefoursectionsisfurthersubdividedintofoursectionsandtheneachintoyetanotherfoursections.
AbeautifulgardensurroundstheTajMahal.Thegreentreesmakethemarblelookevenwhiter.InfrontofthemainentrancetothebuildingthereisthereflectionofTajMahalinthewaterofanarrowpond.
ThematerialswerebroughtinfromalloverIndiaandcentralAsiaandwhitemarblefromJodhpur.PreciousstonesfortheinlaycamefromBaghdad,Egypt,Russia,China,andsoon.TheuniqueMughalstylexxbineselementsandstylesofPersian,CentralAsianandIslamicarchitecture.TheBageecha,theornamentalgardensthroughwhichthepathslead,areplannedalongclassicalMughalcharbaghstyle.Twomarblecanalsstuddedwithfountains,linedwithcypresstreesemanatingfromthecentral,raisedpoolcrossinthecentreofthegarden,dividingitintofourequalsquares.Ineachsquarethereare16flowerbeds,makingatotalof64witharound400plantsineachbed.Thefeaturetobenotedisthatthegardenislaidoutinsuchawayastomaintainperfectsymmetry.Thechannels,withaperfectreflectionoftheTaj,usedtobestockedwithcolorfulfishandthegardenswithbeautifulbirds.
TajMahalisbuiltentirelyofwhitemarble.Itsstunningarchitecturalbeautyisbeyondadequatedescription,particularlyatdawnandsunset.TheTajseemstoglowinthelightofthefullmoon.Onafoggymorning,thevisitorsexperiencetheTajasifsuspendedwhen

LocatedatthecityofAgraintheStateofUttarPradesh,theTajMahalisoneofthemostbeautifulmasterpiecesofarchitectureintheworld.Agra,situatedabout200kmsouthofNewDelhi,wastheCapitaloftheMughals(Moguls),theMuslimEmperorswhoruledNorthernIndiabetweenthesixteenthandnineteenthcenturies.TheMughalswerethedescendentsoftwoofthemostskilledwarriorsinhistory:
theTurksandtheMongols.TheMughaldynastyreacheditshigheststrengthandfameduringthereignoftheirearlyEmperors,Akbar,Jehangir,andShahJehan.
ItwasShahJehanwhoorderedthebuildingoftheTaj,inhonorofhiswife,ArjumandBanuwholaterbecameknownasMumtazMahal,theDistinguishedofthePalace.MumtazandShahJehanweremarriedin1612and,overthenext18years,had14childrentogether.TheEmpressusedtoacxxpanyherhusbandinhismilitary
campaigns,anditwasin1630,inBurhanpur,thatshegavebirthtoherlastchild,forshediedinchildbirth.SogreatwastheEmperorlovetohiswifethatheorderedthebuildingofthemostbeautifulmausoleumonEarthforher.
AlthoughitisnotknownforsurewhoplannedtheTaj,thenameofanIndianarchitectofPersiandescent,UstadAhmadLahori,hasbeencitedinmanysources.Assoonasconstructionbeganin1630,masons,craftsmen,sculptors,andcalligraphersweresummonedfromPersia,theOttomanEmpire,andEuropetoworkonthemasterpiece.ThesitewaschosenneartheCapital,AgraonthesouthwestbankoftheRiverYamuna.Thearchitecturalxxplexisxxprisedoffivemainelements:
theDarwazaormaingateway,theBageechaorgarden,theMasjidormosque,theNaqqarKhanaorresthouse,andtheRauzaortheTajMahalmausoleum.TheactualTombissituatedinsidetheTaj.
TheuniquemughalstylexxbineselementsofPersian,CentralAsian,andIslamicarchitecture.Mostimpressivearetheblackandwhitechessboardmarblefloor,thefourtallminarets(40mhigh)atthecornersofthestructure,andthemajesticdomeinthemiddle.Oncloserlook,theletteringoftheQuranversesaroundthearchwaysappearstobeuniform,regardlessoftheirheight.Theletteringspacinganddensityhasbeencustomizedtogivethisimpressiontothebeholder.Otherillusionaryeffectshavebeenaccountedforinthegeometryofthetombandthetallminarets.Theimpressivepietraduraartworkincludesgeometricelements,plantsandflowers,mostlyxxmoninIslamicarchitecture.Thelevelofsophisticationinartworkbexxesobviouswhenonerealizesthata3cmdecorativeelementcontainsmorethan50inlaidgemstones.
Althoughsuchadevotiontoawifereachingtobuildamonumentseemedlikeaweaknessforanemperor,ShahJahanwasclearlydetermined.HechoseapeacefulsitebytheRiverofJumnaaboutoneandahalfmilesawayfromAgraonthesouthernedgeofthecity,wherecouldbeseenfromtheAgraFortress.Theclosenesstotheriveralsometthewaterneedfortheconstructionandgarden.
ShahJahandecidedtomoveMumtaztoAgrainDecember1631andwasburiedinadomedbuildingtemporarilyontheconstructionsiteoftheuniquemausoleuminJanuary8,1632.
MirAbulKarimandMukamatKhanwaspositionedassupervisorsoftheconstruction,howeverthearchitectwasnevermentionedbytheMogulEmpireshistoriansthatleftquestionsanddisputesaboutthearchitect.EventhoughsomeinsiststhatthebuildingwastheworkofaEuropean,theVenetianGeronimoVereneo,thereisnotraceofEuropeanarchitecturalstyle.AlsoVereneostombstoneinAgra,wheretheChristianswereburied,itwasstatedthathediedinLahorebutnothingmoreabouttheconstructionofTajMahal.ThemostreliablearchitectmightbeUstadAhmadLahori,whowasthearchitectoftheRedFortofAgraandmostprobablytookpartintheconstructionofTajMahal,whichwasindeedemphasisedinapoemofhissonLutfullahMuhandis.
ThebodyofMumtazlaidforthethirdandthefinallyatthecenterofthemausoleumonnorth-southwithherfaceturnedwestwardtoHolyMeccainMay26,1633.The
three-domedmosquewassituatedonthewestwithitsalcovenamelymihrabpointingthedirectionofMeccafortheprayers.ThemosqueontheeastsidemightnotusedasamosqueinpurposebutapilgrimageguesthouseasthebackwallwasnotmarkingMecca.Itmightmostprobablybuildforthesymmetryorechoing.
