TheWesterndietishighinsugar,fat,oilandmeat.Byeatingthesefoods,peoplebegantogetfatterandsicker.DavidTilmansaysoverweightpeopleareatgreaterriskfornon-infectiousdiseaseslikediabetes(糖尿病)andheartdisease.

Unfortunatelywhenpeoplebecomeindustrialized,iftheyadoptthisWesterndiet,theyaregoingtohavethesehealthproblems,especiallyindevelopingcountriesinAsia.Chinaisanexam

plewherethenumberofdiabetescaseshasbeenjumpingfromlessthanonepercentto10percentofthepopulationastheybegantoindustrializeovera20-yearperiod.Andthatishappeningallacrosstheworld,inMexico,inNigeriaandsoon.

And,adietbadforhumanbeings,isalsobadfortheenvironment.Astheworld’spopulationgrows,moreforestsandtropical(热带的)areaswillbecomefarmlandsforcropsorgrasslandsforcattle.Wearelikelytohavemoregreenhousegasinthefuturefromagriculturethanthatcomingoutofallformsoftransportationrightnow.

Mr.Tilmancallsthelinkbetweenthediet,theenvironmentandhumanhealth,“atrilemma”—aproblemofferingadifficultchoice.HesaysonepossiblesolutionisleavingtheWesterndietbehind.

Dr.Thaneisazoologist.Shehasmanyresearchesinthesoundsofelephants.WhenshewasinOhio,sheoftenheardsomestrangenoisesmadebyMalikaaftersunset.Malikawasa10-year-oldAfricanelephant.

Malikalivednearahighway.Dr.Thanesays,“IcouldnottellthedifferencebetweenMalika’scallandthedistanttrucks’noise.”SheandotherscientistsstudiedMalika’ssounds.ItturnedoutthatMalikawascopyingthesoundsofthetrucksgoingby.WhywouldMalikacopytruckswhichsheheardgoingbyonthehighway?

Aftercopyingthenewsounds,animalsmayenjoypracticingthem.Whentheyarekeptoutsideoftheirnaturalenvironment,theymaycopyunusualsounds.Thatmaybewhyanelephantcancopythesoundoftrucks.

“Malikawasnottheonlyelephantthatcancopyothersounds,”Dr.Thanesays.Cameroisa24-year-oldmaleAfricanelephant.Hespent15yearswithtwofemaleAsianelephants.Asianelephantscanmakechirpingsounds(soundsmadebybirds)totalkwithoneanother.Africanelephantsusuallydonotmakechirpingsounds.ButCameronowdoes.HeiscopyinghisAsianelephantfriends.Dr.Thanesaysthatelephantsneedtoformbondswiththeirfamilyandfriends.Shesays,“Theymakesoundstocommunicatewitheachother.Whentheyareseparated,theyusesoundstokeepincontact.”

Thefindingthattheparrot,dolphins,humans,andelephantscanlearntocopyothersoundsshowsthatcopyingisonewaythatanimalsandpeoplemakenewfriendsandkeepoldones.

Atfirstglance,Ronnylookedlikeeveryotherkidinthefirst-gradeclassroomwhereIvolunteeredastheReadingMom.However,hearrivedatschooldirtyeverymorning,andalongwithhisoutwardappearance,Ronnystoodapartfromhisclassmatesinotherways,too.Hishomewasamessandhisparentsneversettledinoneplace.Hehadyettoliveafullyearinanyoneplace.

EverytimewhenitwasRonny’sturntoread,hewouldsitclosetome.Iwatchedhisfingersmoveslowlyundereachletterashestruggledtosoundout“BudtheSub.”Itsoundedmorelike“BawDawSaw”whenhesaiditbecauseofhisspeechimpedimentandhisdifficultywiththealphabet.

TheyearpassedquicklyandRonnyhadmadesomeprogressbuthardlyenoughtobringhimuptogradelevel.Afewweeksbeforetheschoolyearended,Iheldanawardceremony.IttookmeawhiletofigureoutwhereRonnyfit;Ineededsomethingpositive,buttherewasn’treallymuch.Ifinallydecidedon“MostImprovedReader.”IpresentedRonnywithhiscertificateandabook.

Afewdayslater,Ireturnedtotheschooltovisit.IsawRonnyreadthebook.Histeacherappearedbesideme.“Hehasn’tputthatbookdownsinceyougaveittohim.It’sthefirstbookhe’severactuallyowned.”

Fightingbacktears,IapproachedRonnyandasked,“Willyoureadmeyourbook,Ronny?

Andthen,forthenextfewminutes,hereadtomewithmoreexpression,clarity,andeasethanI’deverthoughtpossibleforhim.Whenhefinishedreading,Ronnyclosedhisbookandsaidwithgreatsatisfaction,“Goodbook.”

Tomakeacomparison,acupofcoffeecontainsabout95milligrams(毫克)ofcaffeine.An8.3ouncecanofRedBullcontains75milligrams,morethantwicetheamountofcaffeineina12ouncecanofCocaCola.
