Therewerealsoprofessionalfacereadersduringthistimewhocombinedtherolesofpriest,astrologerandcounsellor.Theywerewell-educatedmenwithgreatcompassionforhumanfrailty.TheChineseunderstoodtheconceptthatthefacerepresentstheenergies,healthandfortuneofapersonandtheywishedtoliveinharmonywiththese,andwiththeprevailingenergiesofthefiveelements,yinandyang,andtheseasons.ThiswisdomhasseenahugeresurgenceintheWestduringthepast20yearswiththegrowthofacupuncture,Chineseherbalmedicine,FengShuiandQiGong.

Thestartingprinciplesoffacereadingarethecosmicenergiesofthefiveelementsandyinandyang.Theelementsaresymbolsandrepresentqualitiesofenergywithineachpersonwhicharereflectedintheface.Anelaboratephysical,psychologicalandemotionalprofilecanbebuiltup,incorporatingtheenergiesofthefeatures,the‘lifepoints’oftheface,thethreedivisionsfromtoptobottom(forehead,midfaceandlowerface)whichshowthenervous,circulatoryanddigestivesystemsandthefacialzoneswhichrepresenttheinternalorgans.
