CriticalReading–CriticalThinking

Oneofourgreatestresponsibilitiestoourselvesasadultsistodevelopaclearunderstandingaboutthewaythingsareintheworldaroundus.Inourcomplicatedsociety,manyissuesarisethatdemandourattention,ouranalysis,andourdecision.Unfortunately,mostofushavenotbeenwell-trainedinthinkingcritically.Wetendtoaccepttheguidanceofthosewerespectorbelievearebetterinformedthanweare.Thusweoftenreachadulthoodstillclingingtotheattitudetaughtusbyourparentsandotherauthorityfiguresfromouryouth.Educatedpersons,however,arenotsatisfiedwith“borrowing”theopinionsandideasofothers–theyinsistonformingtheirown.Todoso,theycarefullyanalyzetheirbeliefs.This,however,isonlythefirststepindevelopingaresponsibleopinion.Otherviewpointsmaybeequallyvalid,andmustbeconsideredbeforewecandevelopacompleteunderstandingofanissue.Forexample,imagineyouarelookingatasculpturefromonespot,tryingtounderstandtheartist’smessage.Althoughyourviewofthesculpturemaybeaccurate,itisnotcomplete.Itisnotuntilyouwalkaroundthesculptureandseeitfromdifferentperspectivesthatyoucangetafullsenseofwhatitreallylookslike.

Itisthesamewithmostoftheimportantissuesandproblemsinlife–oneperspectiveisnotenoughtogiveusthewholepicture.Itisessentialtoseekotherperspectivesontheissueswearetryingtounderstand.Whataresomewayswecangetinformationonotherperspectives?

Take,forexample,theemotionalissueofabortion.Todevelopanunderstandingoftheissue,wemustexamineitfromallpossiblepointsofview.Whatarethepossibleperspectivesonthisissue?
