Thenumberofaccidentsinvolvingpedestrians(行人)wearingheadphonesisontherise,areportsuggests,causingfreshwarningfromroadsafetygroupsinBritain.
AUS-basedstudyfoundatotalof116reportsofdeathorinjurytopedestrianswearingheadphonesbetween2004and2011,jumpingfrom 16in 2005to 47in 2011.
Mostvictimsweremen(68%)andundertheageof30(67%),witharoundoneintenofallcases(9%)undertheageof18.Some89%ofthecasesoccurredinurbanareasandmorethanhalf(55%)ofthevictimswerestruckbytrains.
Eighty-oneofthe116accidents(70%)resultedintheperson’sdeath—eventhoughawarningwassoundedinaroundathirdofthecases.

Inthisstudy,researchersexaminedwhetherexposuretoviolencecouldmakechildren’stelomeresshortenfasterthannormal.Theyinterviewedthemothersof236childrenatages5,7and10,askingwhethertheyoungstershadbeenexposedtodomesticviolencebetweenthemotherandherpartner;physicalmaltreatmentbyanadult;orbullying.Researchersmeasuredthechildren’stelomeres—incellsobtainedbyswabbing(擦拭)theinsidesoftheircheeks—atages5and10.
