AssessmentTaskInstructions

Anorganizedportfolioofevidenceshouldbegatheredoveranextendedperiodoftimeinordertodemonstratecompetenceintheconfigurationandadministrationofhypertextsystems.Thisshouldincludeannotateddetailsofconfigurationchanges（preferablywithversioncontrolsubsystemsinuse）,copiesofreports,logfiles,errorsituations,securityitemsandresourcesused–ineffect,acompletehistoryoftheserviceprovisionduringthecandidate’stenureofit.

Iftheservicehasnotbeenphysicallysupported,thecandidatemustresearchtheserviceandproduceareport（normallyofbetween400and800words）containingbriefoutlinesofthefollowing:

∙Applicationareasfortheservice

∙Majorconfigurationoptionswhichmustincludesecurityissues

∙Resourcestosupporttheadministrationoftheservice

∙Featuresandutilitiesthatsupporttheserviceandaidreportingabouttheservice

Portfolio

Youmustproduceanorganizedportfolioofevidence,gatheredoveranextendedperiodoftimeinordertodemonstratecompetence.Inconfiguringandadministeringahypertextsystem,eg:

wu-ftpdApacheorIIShttpd.Thisshouldincludeannotateddetailsofconfigurationchanges（preferablywithversioncontrolsubsystemsinuse）,copiesofreports,logfiles,errorsituations,securityitemsandresourcesused–ineffect,acompletehistoryoftheserviceprovisionduringyourtenureofit.Youshouldgatherinformationfromamultitudeofsourcesincludingtechnicalreferencemanuals,newsgroups,vendor’son-linesupportsites,etc.

Non-trivialconfigurationexamplesinclude:

∙Set-upsystemaccountsforusebytheservice,（eg:

specificserviceaccount,maillistowner）

∙Set-upandmaintenanceofservice’suseraccounts,（ie:

usersandgroupsnotmaintainedwithintheexistingdomain）

∙Customisederrorandconfigurationmessages

∙Individualfileanddirectoryaccessrestrictions（especiallyaccesstoexecutableutilitiesandprivatedatafiles）

Examplesofdocuments,usedtoprovideassistancetousersinclude:

∙Mailshotsandindividualcorrespondenceviahardcopyandemail;technicalsupportrequests;webpages,etc.

Inallcases,youarerequiredtoworkonthreelevels:

1.Theconfigurationandmaintenanceoftheservice.

2.Theprovisionandawarenessoftheservicetousers.

3.Interactionwithmanagementregardingtheset-upofandreportingfromtheservice.
