Objective

SetupaVTPdomain,createandmaintainVLANs,anduseInter-SwitchLink

(ISL)and802.1QtrunkingonCiscoCatalyst2960and3560seriesEthernet

switchesusingcommand-lineinterface(CLI)mode.

Scenario

VLANsmustlogicallysegmentanetworkbyfunction,team,orapplication,

regardlessofthephysicallocationoftheusers.AllendstationsinaparticularIP

subnetareoftenassociatedwithaspecificVLAN.VLANmembershiponaswitch

thatisassignedmanuallyforeachinterfaceisknownasstaticVLAN

membership.

Trunking,orconnectingswitches,andtheVLANTrunkingProtocol(VTP)are

usedtosegmentthenetwork.VTPmanagestheaddition,deletion,andrenaming

ofVLANsontheentirenetworkfromasinglecentralswitch.VTPminimizes

configurationinconsistenciesthatcancauseproblems,suchasduplicateVLAN

names,incorrectVLAN-typespecifications,andsecurityviolations.

Step1

Poweruptheswitchesandusethestandardprocessforestablishinga

HyperTerminalconsoleconnectionfromaworkstationtoeachswitchinyourpod.

Ifyouareconnectingremotelytoyourswitches,followtheinstructionsthathave

beensuppliedbyyourinstructor.

PrepareforthelabbyremovingallVLANinformationandconfigurationsthatmay

havebeenpreviouslyenteredintoyouswitches.RefertoLab2.0“Clearinga

Switch”andLab2.0b“ClearingaSwitchConnectedtoaLargerNetwork.”

Step2

Todifferentiatebetweenthedevices,givetheswitchesnamesusingthe

hostnamecommand.WewillalsoputIPaddressesonthemanagementVLAN

accordingtothediagram.Bydefault,VLAN1isusedasthemanagementVLAN.

Thefollowingisasampleconfigurationforthe3560switchDLS1.

Step4

AVTPdomain,alsocalledaVLANmanagementdomain,consistsoftrunkedor

interconnectedswitchesthatareundertheadministrativeresponsibilityofa

switchorswitchesinserverVTPmode.AswitchcanbeinonlyoneVTPdomain

withthesameVTPdomainname.ThedefaultVTPmodeforthe2960and3560

switchesisservermode.VLANinformationisnotpropagateduntiladomain

nameisspecifiedandtrunksaresetupbetweenthedevices.

ThefollowingtabledescribesthethreeVTPmodes.

inNVRAM.

VTPTransparent

SwitchesdonotparticipateinVTP.Theswitchdoesnot

advertiseitsVLANconfigurationanddoesnot

synchronizeitsconfigurationbasedonreceived

advertisements.However,inVTPversion2,transparent

switchesdoforwardVTPadvertisementsthatthey

receivefromotherswitchesfromtheirtrunkinterfaces.

Therefore,localVLANsmaybecreated,modified,and

deletedonaswitchinthetransparentmode.

InVTPtransparentmode,VLANconfigurationsare

savedinNVRAM,buttheyarenotadvertisedtoother

switches.

Usetheshowvtpstatuscommandonanyoftheswitches.Theoutputshould

AllswitchesintheVTPdomainmustrunthesameVTPversion.

TheimportanceoftheconfigurationrevisionnumberisthattheswitchinVTP

servermodewiththehighestrevisionnumberpropagatesVLANinformationover

trunkedports.EverytimeVLANinformationismodifiedandsavedintheVLAN

databaseorvlan.datfile,therevisionnumberisincreasedbyonewhentheuser

exitsfromVLANconfigurationmode.

MultipleswitchesintheVTPdomaincanbeinVTPservermode.Theseswitches

canbeusedtomanageallotherswitchesintheVTPdomain.Thisissuitablefor

small-scalenetworkswheretheVLANinformationissmallandeasilystoredinall

switches.Inalargenetwork,theadministratormustdeterminewhichswitches

makethebestVTPservers.Thenetworkadministratorshouldsetasidesomeof

themorepowerfulswitchesandkeepthemasVTPservers.Theotherswitches

intheVTPdomaincanbeconfiguredasclients.ThenumberofVTPservers

shouldbeconsistentbasedontheamountofredundancydesiredinthenetwork.
