ⅠTheimportanceofpromotingstudents'readingability

Withthedevelopmentofsociety,Englishreadingnotonlyappearsinexamsbutalsoexistsinlookinginformation,gettingInfo,entertainingorchattingonline.Englisharticlesaregettingmoreandmore,andtherangeofthemisgettingwiderandwider.English,betheworldnowadaysinternationalsocialintercourselanguagethesuccessthatitobtainsisanunprecedentedinhistoryof.Soimprovingstudents'readingabilityisofgreaturgency.

Thescoretakesabout40%inthecollegeEnglishtestband4.Inacertainextent,doingwellornotinthereadingcomprehensiondirectlyinfluencesthegradesofEnglishtests.MoreoverreadingcouldmaintaintheinterestingoflearningEnglish,strengthenknowledgeandimproveabilityandbehelpfulforstudentstohaveabetterunderstandingoftheworld.Wecannotstudyforeignlanguagewellwithoutimprovingthereadingability.

ⅡStatusinquoofcollegestudents’readingabilityandtheanalysisoftheobstacles

Englishreadingcomprehensiveabilityconsistsofvocabulary,grammar,culturalknowledgeandreadingskills.Accordingtomyquestionnaire,however,almost80%studentswhoansweredtoitarefarfromsatisfiedwiththeirreadingjob.Toseewhy,Itookamoredetailedquestionnaire.FinallyIgotthereasons.

1.Severelackofvocabularies

Asthesurveyshows,thereexistthreeproblems.First,theypaylittleattentiontotheaccumulationofvocabularies.Second,about45%studentsfailtocontinuereadingwhentheymeetnewwords.Third,someofthemjustguessthenewwordsaccordingtothetexts,whichinfluencestheunderstandingtothedetailsoftexts.

Vocabularyisthefoundationoflanguage,andeveryreadingmaterialismadeupofanumberofwordsformedingrammaticalrules.Dictionarywithalargevocabularycontainsasmanyas200,000entries.Butacommoncollegestudentindeedmasterandapplyonly3,000to4,000words.Itissimplyadropinthebucket!

whatismore,Scientificandtechnicaltermsaswellascatchphrasecontinuallyappearonpaper.NodoubtthatthesesituationsaddthedifficultytoEnglishreading.Hencewehavetoenlargeourvocabularyinordertoimprovereadingability.Ofcourseitneedspersistence,orreadingwillhardlygoon.Generallythelargervocabularyyougetthefewerobstaclesyoumeet.

Oneofreasonsforvocabularyobstaclesisthatwepaylittleattentiontovocabularyaccumulation.Therangeofvocabularyisjustsonarrow.Secondmanyofusjustmasteronewordandonemeaning.Sowhentheymeetpolysemy,theyfeelconfused.Moreover,somestudentswouldskipthewordsthattheydonotknow.Ortheywouldcountondictionaryore-dictionary,whicheitherwasteslotsoftimeorthemeaningtheygetdoesn’tnecessarilymeettheoneinthecontext.Itisthemainobstacleforstudentstoenhancetheirreadingability.

2.grammaticalcapabilityisweak

Ingrammartheproblemsarealsosevere,andwhichformabiggerhinder,oncefacinglongsentencesthestudentsaccountingfor72%ofthetotalarehardtomakethemclear.66%studentsareinsensitivetocontextualpronouns,disjunctiveconjunctions,andcausaladverbs.Thebaseunitofasentenceisword,andeverysentenceismadeupofwordsincertaingrammaticalrules.Havingacquiredagoodknowledgeofgrammarisgoodtoenhancethecapacityofanalyzingsentences.Whenreadingweshouldgraspthemeaningofsentencesthroughthegrammarstructuresorstyles.ThusGrammarhasagreateffectonreadingspeedandaccuracy.

3.shortcomingsinbackgroundKnowledge

Asweallknow,thedifferencesoftheareaofnationallife,surroundings,socialsystemandcivilizationleadtothediversityofeverynation’sthinkingstyle,languagehabitandbehavior.Becauseofthis,eachnationhavebigdifficultyincommutating.ThoughastudentabroadlearnsalotofEnglishlanguage,hewouldfeelhardtohandlethecultureshock.Thatisbecauseheknowslittleaboutthecultureabroad.Thisgivesusalessonthatwehavetolearntheculturewellinlanguagestudying.Inmysurveys,56%studentshavesuchappearancethattheyknowallthewordsinaparagraph,butstilldonotunderstandthehiddenmeaningofit.83%studentsbeinglackofculturalbackgroundinformationofBritain&Americahavepoorunderstandingonreading,whichcausesreadingdisabilities.Let’stake“face”forexample.

Sowhatdoestheexpression“facethemusic”mean?

Itmeanstoaccepttheresultsofwhatyouhavedone.Nooneissurehowtheexpressionbegan.Onestoryisthatitcamefromamilitaryceremonyheldwhenasoldierwasforcedoutofanarmy.

4.Notgoodandscientificreadinghabits

Readingabilityincludesreadingspeedandreadingcomprehension.Thesurveyshowsthattherearelotsofstudentsdevelopinghabitsonreading,whichalsoaffectReadingability.Somestudentsareaccustomedtomurmuringwords.Infactthisisquiteunscientific,becausetheypaymuchattentiontovocabularies,andwhichhasanadverseeffectupontheentireunderstandingofthecontentsaswellasreadingspeed.Thusvocalizinggoesagainstenhancingreadingability.sothesamewithsub-vocalizing.Someotherslikedoingsomethingelsewhilereading,suchaspickinghisnose,playingpens,listeningtomusic.Theseactionsdistracttheirattentionsoasnottoenhancereadingability.Badhabitsofreadingcanonlyincreaseyourburden.

5.Badpsychologyofreading

Asformentalmechanism,manypsycholinguistsholdthatreadingisapsychologicalactivity.Itisaprocedureofreadersandauthorsmutualparticipating.Inthetraditionalmodeofteaching,teachersjustimpartbasicknowledge,andregardlessofcultivatingstudents’goodpsychologyofreading.Asaresult,studentsarepronetobringoutimpatience,anxiety,fearandsuchbadfeelings.52%studentscannotkeepagoodmoodwhilereadinginmyresearch.Thereforebadpsychologyofreadinggreatlyaffectsimprovementofreadingability.

ⅢSomeSuggestionstoovercometheobstaclesinreading

Readingisakindofconstructivethinkingprocess.Itnotonlyincludestheunderstandingoftheliteralmeaning,butalsoincludestheunderstandingoftheimplicitsemantics.Readingabilitycontainsanalysis,evaluationandimagination.Itisessentialtostrengthenstudents’readingstrategyInordertoadapttotheneedsofforeignlanguagelearning.Basedontheabovedyslexiaintheanalysis,andthepracticeteaching,thefollowingcaneliminatethoseobstacles.Inordertoeffectivelyimprovestudent'sreadingability,collegeEnglishteachersshouldfindsomepertinentcountermeasuresintheordinaryEnglishteachingimplementation.
