 Goodafternoon.ItisagreathonorformetobehereinShanghai,andtohavethisopportunitytospeakwithallofyou.I'dliketothankFudanUniversity'sPresidentYangforhishospitality[hɒspɪ'tælɪtɪ]andhisgracious['greɪʃəs]welcome.I'dalsoliketothankouroutstandingAmbassador,[æm'bæsədə]JonHuntsman,whoexemplifies[ɪg'zemplɪfaɪ;eg-]thedeeptiesandrespectbetweenournations.Idon'tknowwhathesaid,butIhopeitwasgood.(Laughter.)

WhatI'dliketodoistomakesomeopeningremarks,andthenwhatI'mreallylookingforwardtodoingistakingquestions,notonlyfromstudentswhoareintheaudience,butalsowe'vereceivedquestionsonline,whichwillbeaskedbysomeofthestudentswhoarehereintheaudience,aswellasbyAmbassadorHuntsman.AndIamverysorrythatmyChineseisnotasgoodasyourEnglish,butIamlookingforwardtothischancetohaveadialogue.

Thisismyfirsttimetraveling['trævəliŋ]toChina,andI'mexcitedtoseethismajestic[mə'dʒestɪk]country.Here,inShanghai,weseethegrowththathascaughttheattentionoftheworld--thesoaring[ˈsɔːrɪŋ]skyscrapers,['skaɪskreɪpə]thebustling['bʌslɪŋ]streetsandentrepreneurial[,ɒntrəprə'nɜːrɪəlactivity.AndjustasI'mimpressedbythesesignsofChina'sjourney['dʒɜːnɪ]tothe21stcentury,I'meagertoseethoseancientplacesthatspeaktousfromChina'sdistantpast.TomorrowandthenextdayIhopetohaveachancewhenI'minBeijingtoseethemajesty['mædʒɪstɪ]oftheForbiddenCity紫禁城

andthewonderoftheGreatWall.Truly,thisisanationthatencompasses[ɪn'kʌmpəs;en-botharichhistoryandabeliefinthepromiseofthefuture.

Thesamecanbesaidoftherelationshipbetweenourtwocountries.Shanghai,ofcourse,isacitythathasgreatmeaninginthehistoryoftherelationshipbetweentheUnitedStatesandChina.Itwashere,37yearsago,thattheShanghaiCommuniqué[kə,mjuːnɪ'keɪ]公报openedthedoortoanewchapterofengagement[ɪn'geɪdʒm(ə)nt;en-]betweenourgovernmentsandamongourpeople.However,America'stiestothiscity--andtothiscountry--stretchbackfurther,totheearliestdaysofAmerica'sindependence.

 

In1784,ourfoundingfather,GeorgeWashington,commissioned[kə'mɪʃənd]委任theEmpress['emprɪs]ofChina,中国皇后号

ashipthatsetsailfortheseshoressothatitcouldpursuetradewiththeQingDynasty.Washingtonwantedtoseetheshipcarrytheflagaroundtheglobe,andtoforge[fɔːdʒ]newtieswithnationslikeChina.ThisisacommonAmericanimpulse['ɪmpʌls]--thedesiretoreachfornewhorizons[hə'raɪz(ə)n],andtoforgenewpartnerships['pɑːtnəʃɪp合作关系thataremutually[ˈmjuːtʃuəli]互相地beneficial.

Overthetwocenturiesthathavefollowed,thecurrents['kʌr(ə)nt]ofhistoryhavesteered[stɪə控制,引导therelationshipbetweenourcountriesinmanydirections.Andeveninthemidstoftumultuous[tjʊ'mʌltjʊəs]狂暴的winds,ourpeoplehadopportunitiestoforgedeepandevendramaticties.Forinstance,Americanswillneverforgetthehospitalityshowntoourpilots['paɪlət]whowereshotdownoveryoursoilduringWorldWarII,andcaredforbyChinesecivilians[sɪ'vɪlj(ə)n]whoriskedallthattheyhadbydoingso.AndChineseveterans['vet(ə)r(ə)n]老兵ofthatwarstillwarmlygreetthoseAmericanveteranswhoreturntothesiteswheretheyfoughttohelpliberateChinafromoccupation.

Adifferentkindofconnectionwasmadenearly40yearsagowhenthefrostbetweenourcountriesbegantothaw[θɔː]融解;变暖和throughthesimplegameoftabletennis.Theveryunlikelynatureofthisengagementcontributedtoitssuccess--becauseforallourdifferences,bothourcommonhumanityandoursharedcuriositywererevealed.AsoneAmericanplayerdescribedhisvisittoChina--"[The]peoplearejustlikeus…ThecountryisverysimilartoAmerica,butstillverydifferent."

OfcoursethissmallopeningwasfollowedbytheachievementoftheShanghaiCommuniqués,andtheeventualestablishmentofformalrelationsbetweentheUnitedStatesandChinain1979.Andinthreedecades,justlookathowfarwehavecome.

 

In1979,tradebetweentheUnitedStatesandChinastoodatroughly$5billion--todayittopsover$400billioneachyear.Thecommerceaffectsourpeople'slivesinsomanyways.AmericaimportsfromChinamanyofthecomputerpartsweuse,theclotheswewear;andweexporttoChinamachinery[mə'ʃiːn(ə)rɪ]thathelpspoweryourindustry.ThistradecouldcreateevenmorejobsonbothsidesofthePacific,[pə'sɪfɪk]whileallowingourpeopletoenjoyabetterqualityoflife.Andasdemandbecomesmorebalanced,itcanleadtoevenbroaderprosperity.[prɒ'sperɪtɪ]

In1979,thepolitical[pə'lɪtɪk(ə)l]cooperationbetweentheUnitedStatesandChinawasrootedlargelyinoursharedrivalry['raɪv(ə)lrɪ]竞争;对抗withtheSovietUnion.Today,wehaveapositive,constructiveandcomprehensiverelationshipthatopensthedoortopartnershiponthekeyglobalissuesofourtime--economicrecoveryandthedevelopmentofcleanenergy;stoppingthespreadofnuclear['njuːklɪə]weaponsandthescourge[skɜːdʒ]苦难的根源ofclimatechange;thepromotionofpeaceandsecurityinAsia[ˈeɪʒə]andaroundtheglobe.Alloftheseissueswillbeontheagenda[ə'dʒendə]议程;tomorrowwhenImeetwithPresidentHu.

Andin1979,theconnectionsamongourpeoplewerelimited.Today,weseethecuriosity[kjʊərɪ'ɒsɪtɪ]ofthoseping-pongplayersmanifestedinthetiesthatarebeingforgedacrossmanysectors.部门Thesecondhighest[haɪst]numberofforeignstudentsintheUnitedStatescomefromChina,andwe'veseena50percentincreaseinthestudyofChineseamongourownstudents.Therearenearly200"friendshipcities"drawingourcommunitiestogether.AmericanandChinesescientistscooperateonnewresearchanddiscovery.Andofcourse,YaoMingisjustonesignalofoursharedloveofbasketball--I'monlysorrythatIwon'tbeabletoseeaShanghaiSharks[ʃɑːk]鲨鱼队gamewhileI'mvisiting.

Itisnocoincidence[kəʊ'ɪnsɪd(ə)ns]同时发生thattherelationshipbetweenourcountrieshasaccompaniedaperiodofpositivechange.Chinahasliftedhundredsofmillionsofpeopleoutofpoverty--anaccomplishmentunparalleled[ʌn'pærəlel无法匹敌的inhumanhistory--whileplayingalargerroleinglobalevents.AndtheUnitedStateshasseenoureconomygrowalongwiththestandardoflivingenjoyedbyourpeople,whilebringingtheColdWartoasuccessfulconclusion.

 

ThereisaChineseproverb['prɒvɜːb]:

"Considerthepast,andyoushallknowthefuture."Surely,wehaveknownsetbacksandchallenges['tʃælɪn(d)ʒ]overthelast30years.Ourrelationshiphasnotbeenwithoutdisagreementanddifficulty.Butthenotionthatwemustbeadversaries敌手isnotpredestined[,pri:

'destind注定的--notwhenweconsiderthepast.Indeed,becauseofourcooperation[kəʊ,ɒpə'reɪʃ(ə)n,boththeUnitedStatesandChinaaremoreprosperousandmoresecure.[sɪ'kjʊəWehaveseenwhatispossiblewhenwebuilduponourmutualinterests,andengageonthebasisofmutualrespect.

Andyetthesuccessofthatengagementdependsuponunderstanding--onsustaining[sə'steɪnɪŋ维持anopendialogue,andlearningaboutoneanotherandfromoneanother.ForjustasthatAmericantabletennisplayerpointedout--wesharemuchincommonashumanbeings,butourcountriesaredifferentincertainways.

Ibelievethateachcountrymustchartitsowncourse.应该勾画出自己要走的路Chinaisanancientnation,withadeeplyrootedculture.TheUnitedStates,bycomparison,[kəm'pærɪs(ə)nisayoungnation,whosecultureisdetermined[dɪ'tɜːmɪnd]bythemanydifferentimmigrants['ɪmɪgr(ə)nt]whohavecometoourshores,andbythefoundingdocumentsthatguideourdemocracy.[dɪ'mɒkrəsɪ]

Thosedocumentsputforwardasimplevisionofhumanaffairs,andtheyenshrine[ɪn'ʃraɪn;en-severalcore.核心principles--thatallmenandwomenarecreatedequal,andpossesscertainfundamentalrights;thatgovernmentshouldreflectthewillofthepeopleandrespondtotheirwishes;thatcommerceshouldbeopen,informationfreelyaccessible;andthatlaws,andnotsimplymen,shouldguaranteetheadministrationofjustice.司法行政

Ofcourse,thestoryofournationisnotwithoutitsdifficultchapters.Inmanyways--overmanyyears--wehavestruggledtoadvancethepromiseoftheseprinciplestoallofourpeople,andtoforgeamoreperfectunion.Wefoughtaverypainfulcivilwar,andfreedaportion['pɔːʃ(ə)n]ofourpopulationfromslavery.Ittooktimeforwomentobeextendedtherighttovote,workerstowintherighttoorganize,andforimmigrantsfromdifferentcornersoftheglobetobefullyembraced.[ɪm'breɪs;em-拥抱;信奉,皈依;包含Evenaftertheywerefreed,AfricanAmericanspersevered[pɜːsɪ'vɪə]坚持;不屈不挠throughconditionsthatwereseparate['sep(ə)rət]andnotequal,beforewinningfullandequalrights.
