Wepresenttheshortstory"AfterTwentyYears,"byO.Henry.Thestorywas originally adaptedandrecordedbytheU.S.DepartmentofState.

The cop movedalongthestreet,lookingstrongandimportant.Thiswasthewayhealwaysmoved.Hewasnotthinkingofhowhelooked.Therewerefewpeopleonthestreettoseehim.Itwasonlyabouttenatnight,butitwascold.Andtherewasawindwithalittleraininit.

Hestoppedatdoorsashewalkedalong,tryingeachdoortobesurethatitwasclosedforthenight.Nowandthenheturnedandlookedupanddownthestreet.Hewasafine-looking cop,watchful,guardingthepeace.

 

Peopleinthispartofthecitywenthomeearly.Nowandthenyoumightseethelightsofashoporofasmallrestaurant.Butmostofthedoorsbelongedtobusinessplacesthathadbeenclosedhoursago.

Thenthe cop suddenlyslowedhiswalk.Nearthedoorofa darkened shopamanwasstanding.Asthe cop walkedtowardhim,themanspokequickly.

“It’sallright,officer,”hesaid.“I’mwaitingforafriend.Twentyyearsagoweagreedtomeetheretonight.Itsoundsstrangetoyou,doesn’tit?

I’llexplainifyouwanttobesurethateverything’sallright.Abouttwentyyearsagotherewasarestaurantwherethisshopstands.‘BigJoe’Brady’srestaurant.”

“Itwashereuntilfiveyearsago,”saidthe cop.

Themannearthedoorhadacolorlesssquarefacewithbrighteyes,andalittlewhitemarknearhisrighteye.Hehadalargejewelinhis necktie.

“Twentyyearsagotonight,”saidtheman,“IhaddinnerherewithJimmyWells.Hewasmybestfriendandthebestfellowintheworld.HeandIgrewuptogetherhereinNewYork,liketwobrothers.IwaseighteenandJimmywastwenty.ThenextmorningIwastostartfortheWest.Iwasgoingtofindajobandmakeagreatsuccess.Youcouldn’thavepulledJimmyoutofNewYork.Hethoughtitwastheonlyplaceonearth.

“Weagreedthatnightthatwewouldmeethereagainintwentyyears.Wethoughtthatintwentyyearswewouldknowwhatkindofmenwewere,andwhatfuturewaitedforus.”

“Itsoundsinteresting,”saidthe cop.“Alongtimebetweenmeetings,itseemstome.HaveyouheardfromyourfriendsinceyouwentWest?

“Yes,foratimewedidwritetoeachother,”saidtheman.“Butafterayearortwo,westopped.TheWestisbig.Imovedaroundeverywhere,andImovedquickly.ButIknowthatJimmywillmeetmehereifhecan.Hewasastrueasanymanintheworld.He’llneverforget.Icameathousandmilestostandheretonight.ButI’llbegladaboutthat,ifmyoldfriendcomestoo.”

Themanwaitingtookoutafinewatch,coveredwithsmalljewels.

“Threeminutesbeforeten,”hesaid.“Itwastenthatnightwhenwesaidgoodbyehereattherestaurantdoor.”

“YouweresuccessfulintheWest,weren’tyou?

”askedthe cop.

“Isurelywas!

IhopeJimmyhasdonehalfaswell.Hewasaslowmover.I’vehadtofightformysuccess.InNewYorkamandoesn’tchangemuch.IntheWestyoulearnhowtofightforwhatyouget.”

The cop tookasteportwo.“I’llgoonmyway,”hesaid.“Ihopeyourfriendcomesallright.Ifheisn’thereatten,areyougoingtoleave?

“Iamnot!

”saidtheother.“I’llwaithalfanhour,atleast.IfJimmyisaliveonearth,he’llbeherebythattime.Goodnight,officer.”

“Goodnight,”saidthe cop,andwalkedaway,tryingdoorsashewent.

Therewasnowacoldrainfallingandthewindwasstronger.Thefewpeoplewalkingalongthatstreetwerehurrying,tryingtokeepwarm.Atthedooroftheshopstoodthemanwhohadcomeathousandmilestomeetafriend.Suchameetingcouldnotbecertain.Buthewaited.

Abouttwentyminuteshewaited,andthenatallmaninalongcoatcamehurryingacrossthestreet.Hewentdirectlytothewaitingman.

“Isthatyou,Bob?

”heasked, doubtfully.

“Isthatyou,JimmyWells?

”criedthemanatthedoor.

Thenewmantooktheotherman’shandsinhis.“It’sBob!

Itsurelyis.IwascertainIwouldfindyouhereifyouwerestillalive.Twentyyearsisalongtime.Theoldrestaurantisgone,Bob.Iwishitwerehere,sothatwecouldhaveanotherdinnerinit.HastheWestbeengoodtoyou?

“ItgavemeeverythingIaskedfor.You’vechanged,Jimmy.Ineverthoughtyouweresotall.”

“Oh,IgrewalittleafterIwastwenty.”

“AreyoudoingwellinNewYork,Jimmy?

“Wellenough.Iworkforthecity.Comeon,Bob,We’llgotoaplaceIknow,andhaveagoodlongtalkaboutoldtimes.”

Thetwomenstartedalongthestreet,arminarm.ThemanfromtheWestwasbeginningtotellthestoryofhislife.Theother,withhiscoatuptohisears,listenedwithinterest.

Atthecornerstoodashopbrightwithelectriclights.Whentheycamenear,eachturnedtolookattheother’sface.

ThemanfromtheWeststoppedsuddenlyandpulledhisarmaway.“You’renotJimmyWells,”hesaid.“Twentyyearsisalongtime,butnotlongenoughtochangetheshapeofaman’snose.”

“Itsometimeschangesagoodmanintoabadone,”saidthetallman.“You’vebeenunderarrestfortenminutes,Bob.Chicago cops thoughtyoumightbecomingtoNewYork.Theytoldustowatchforyou.Areyoucomingwithmequietly?

That’swise.ButfirsthereissomethingIwasaskedtogiveyou.Youmayreadithereatthewindow.It’sfroma cop namedWells.”

ThemanfromtheWestopenedthelittlepieceofpaper.Hishandbegantoshakealittleasheread.

“Bob:

Iwasattheplaceontime.IsawthefaceofthemanwantedbyChicago cops.Ididn’twanttoarrestyoumyself.SoIwentandgotanother cop andsenthimtodothejob.
