IntheEuropeanUnion,oneinfiveyoungpeoplearelookingforwork,thereportclaims.Some27.9%ofyouthswereunemployedinNorthAfricalastyear—ariseoffivepercentagepointson2010.IntheMiddleEast,thefigurestoodat26.5%inthereport'sregionalbreakdown.EveninEastAsia,perhapsthemosteconomicallyactiveregion,theunemploymentratewas2.8timeshigherforyoungpeoplethanforadults,thereportsaid.

But,theILOreportreveals,thetruepictureofyouthunemploymentisevenmorepessimistic.Manyyoungpeopleareextendingtheirtimeinhighereducationbecausetheycannotfindjobs.Othersaretakingpart-timeunskilledworkbecausetheycannotfindworkinthefieldstheytrainedfor.

TheILOsaysthatmorethansixmillionyoungpeopleworldwidehavegivenuplookingforworkandarebecominglyincreasinglydetachedfromsociety.Bynotusingtheirskillstheyarelosingthem,thereportsays,andifthereisnoimprovementinthejobsmarketsoon,theymaybenotonlyunemployed,butunemployable.
