摘要

习语是一种特殊的地域文化特征。

颜色词是其重要组成部分。

当研究习语时,最先要研究颜色词在习语中的体现。

本文首先介绍英语习语相关理论即定义、来源及分类等。

其次文章列举分析不同颜色词在不同语境下的含义。

最后,论文探讨研究颜色词文化内涵在习语中的体现的重要意义与作用。

希望对提高英语学习和增强跨文化交流能力有所帮助。

ABSTRACT

Idiomisakindofspecialregionalculture.Colorwordsareimportantpartsofit.Whenstudyingidioms,firstly,theauthorshouldstudytheexpressionofcolorwordsinidioms.

ThispaperfirstintroducestherelatedtheoriesofEnglishidiomsuchasitsdefinition,itsoriginanditsclassification.Secondly,differentconnotationsofcolorwordsindifferentcontextarelistedandanalyzed.Last,thepaperdiscussesthesignificanceofthestudyoftheculturalconnotationofcolorwordsinidiomsinordertohelppeopletoimprovetheirEnglishlearningandcross-culturalcommunicationability.

1Introduction

Languageishuman-specific.Itisapreciousgift.Language,possessingallthefeaturesofculture,belongstoinstitutionalculture.Languageisnotinheritedbutacquiredandsharedbyawholesocietylikealltheotheraspectsofculture.What’smore,languageisconventionalandgovernedbyruleswhichareacknowledgeandobservedbyasociety.Therefore,languagemirrorsotheraspectsofculture,supportingthem,spreadingthemandhelpingtodevelopingthem.Thisuniquefeatureoflanguagedistinguishesitfromallotherfacetsofculture,andmakesitcruciallyimportantforthetransferofculture.

Colorterm,asapartofthebasicvocabularyinEnglish,hasastrongvitality.Peoplehavedifferentassociationthroughthebasicmeaningofcolortermsandbymixingandmatchingtoformalargenumberoffixedexpressions.TheconceptualmeaningconveyedbycolortermisroughlythesameinEnglish,butthesametermofcolorinthesetwolanguagesmayexpressdifferentculturalassociations.Colorterm,havingparticularculturalconnotationmeaningsmayconveymisunderstandingduetodifferentgeographicconditions,nationalcustoms,histories,politics,economyandnationalpsychology.TheapplicationofrhetoriccolorterminEnglishidiomshasaprofoundhistoryinEngland,whichcanbewellpresentedinthedomainoftherhetoricofChineselanguagewithitsowncharacteristicsinbothexpressionandapplication.Variouscolorsmakeupabeautifulandcolorfulworld.Scientificresearchindicatesthatsevenmillionkindsofcolorscanbefoundintheworld.However,colorexpressionsareonlylimitedtoseveralhundredinclassification.Thenumberofwordsforexpressingcolorinlanguagesofvariousnationalitiesdiffersanditsclassificationvariesaswell.

Althoughdifferentlanguageshavetheirowncolorterms,theyalsohavemanycolorsincommon,suchasthebasiccolorwordsred,yellow,green,blue,black,white,etc.

Thesametermsofcolorindifferentlanguagesexpressesdifferentculturalassociations,asEnglishtermsofcolormayhaveculturalassociationthatisnottransparenttoChineselearnersofEnglishasaforeignlanguage.

2RelatedTheoriesofEnglishIdiom

WhenweanalyzeEnglishidioms,firstly,weshouldunderstandsometheorieswhichincludedefinition,originaswellasclassification.

2.1Definition

Theword"idiom"isderivedfromGreek.IntheGreeketymology,itsbasicdefinitionis"expressionsforparticularity".ButinmodernEnglish,themostpopulardefinitionis"anidiomaticexpressionofalanguage".Thedefinitioncanbeunderstooddifferently.Takingitasawhole,"idiom"referstoalltheuniqueexpressionsofalanguage,namely,thelanguage'sparticularityoridiomaticity.Individually,"idioms"referstoeachidiomaticexpression,thatis,thousandsofidiomsofthelanguage.Thedefinitionof"idioms"inthethesisbelongstothelatterone."Idioms"hererefersonlytoaspecialkindoffixedphrases.Anidiomismadeupwithtwoormorethantwowordswhosemeaningcan'tbemadefromonlyitsliteralmeaning.

2.2Origin

Englishisalanguagewithlonghistory,andEnglishidiomshasalongregion.Englishidiomshasastrongnationalcolorisamirrorwhichreflectshistory.

2.2.1IdiomsfromNavigation

Britainisanislandcountry,theBritishpeoplelivinginthemarinetypegeographicalenvironmentfromgenerationtogeneration,long-termengagedinmaritimeactivities,anddealingwiththeocean.Theylovetheocean,relyontheocean,andhaveaninseparablerelationshipwiththeocean.Thusalargepartofidiomsarerelatedtothesea,ships,seawater,land,swimming,andsoon.Forexample:

1.Allatsea.(迷惑不解)

2.Intheswim.(追逐潮流)

3.Indeepwater.(在水深火热中)

4.Tosinkorswim.(不论成败)

2.2.2IdiomsfromReligion

ReligioninBritainandsomeotherEnglishspeakingcountrieshadagreatinfluence.Manypeoplearebornontheinfluenceofreligious.Manyimportanteventsintheirlivesarecloselyrelatedtoreligion,andthefaithofreligionofthemisenduring.Asaresult,manyidiomsareconnectedwithGod,angels,heaven,hell,devil,church,andsoon.Forexample:

1.Godtempersthewindtotheshornlamb.(天怜受难人)

2.Godhelpsthosewhohelpthemselves.(自助者天助)

3.Rushinwhereangelsfeartotread.(胆大妄为,初生牛犊不怕虎)

2.2.3IdiomsfromtheBible

"Bible"hasapivotalpositioninthewesternculture,affectingallaspectsofwesternsociallife.ItishardtomeasuretheinfluenceoftheBibleontheBritishpeople.Britishpeopleread"theBible"inthechurchandhomefromgenerationtogeneration,"theBible"almostbecameafamilyofessentialbooks.ManyallusionsandstoriesbecametheLifemaximintheBible.Forexample:

2.2.4IdiomsfromAnimalsandPlants

OneofthemajorfeaturesofEnglishidiomsisrelatedtoanimalsandplants.Alargenumberofmetaphorsarecloselyrelatedtopeople'slives,pets,poultry,especiallywithcats,dogs,horses,cattle,sheep,chickens,ducks,geeseandsoon.ThedogisacuteanimalinthemindsoftheUK,somanyidiomsaboutdogsaregood.Forexample:

1.Loveme,lovemydog.(爱屋及乌)

2.cat-and-doglife.(经常争吵的生活)

3.Raincatsanddogs.(倾盆大雨)

4.Wakeasleepingdog.(惹事生非)

InadditiontotheabovementionedsourcesofEnglishIdiomsthereareothersourcesofEnglishidioms,thisarticlewillnotrepeatthistopic.Butthroughtheaboveintroduction,canalreadyglimpsenationalcultureuniquebranddeeplyintheidioms.Byunderstandingtheoriginofidioms,wecandiscoverthecommonfeaturesofEnglishlanguageandsocialculture,andenrichtheunderstandingoflanguageandcultureonthebasisofrichlanguageknowledge.

2.3.Classification

EnglishidiomsarekindsofspecialmeansofexpressionswhichformedintheusinganddevelopingofEnglishIngeneral,includingproverbs,slang,allusions.Thereareobviousdifferencesbetweenthem.Englishhasalonghistoryandalargenumberofidiomswhichconcise,vivid,profoundimpliedmeaning,fun,richinphilosophy.Manyidiomshaveexquisitesymmetry,beautifultone,rhythmcoordinationandgreatbeauty.

2.3.1Proverb

Generallyspeaking,proverbisashortpopularsaying,usuallyofunknownandancientorigin,thatexpresseseffectivelysomecommonplacetruthorusefulthought;Englishproverbcontainstwoformsofphrasesandsentencetype.Itsoutstandingcharacteristicistheextensiveuseofvariousrhetoricaldevices,reflectingtherichEnglishcultureconnotation.TodefinetheEnglishsaying,understanditscharacteristicscontributetobetterusetheEnglishsaying.Forexample:
