MiltonwasborninLondononDecember9,1609asthesonofawealthynotary(公证人).HewaseducatedatSt.Paul'sSchool.MiltonreceivedaMaster’sdegreefromCambridgeUniversityin1632.In1638,heundertookaEuropeantourwherehemetmanyofthemajorthinkersoftheday,especiallyinItaly.

OnhisreturntoEngland,MiltonbecameaPuritan(清教徒),andanopponentoftheCatholicsandoftheStuarts(英国斯图亚特王室).Hewasalsoanardent(热心的,热情洋溢的)polemicist(善辩论者),afollowerofCromwell(克伦威尔),andthelatter'sforeignlanguagesecretary.In1652hebecamecompletelyblind.Hisfirstwifediedin1652andheremarriedin1656.
