InternetExpressionsfortheYearof2009and2010

1.Introduction

PopularChineseInternetexpressions,alsofrequentlyreferredtoasNet-language,isanewlybornlanguagemode.Withtherapiddevelopmentofscienceandtechnologyofourera,theInternetisgainingmoreandmorepopularityevenamongcommonpeople.AccordingtostatisticsmadebytheChinaInternetNetworkInformationCenter(CNNIC),thetotalnumberofChinesenetizenshascometo457000000bytheendofDecember,2010withthecoverageratereaching34.3%.Comparedto2009,thereisanincreaseof73300000Internetusersandthecoverageratehasincreasedby5.4percentagepoint.

Asaresult,therehasbeen,overtherecentyearsafloodofpopularChineseInternetexpressionsemergingandflowingineverycornerofthecyberspace.Amongthem,somederivedfromsocialevents,somecamefromculturalexhange,othersappearedalongwiththeadvanceofscienceandtechnology,stillotherswereoutcomeoftheneedsofconvenienceandnoveltyrequiredbytheInternetexchange.Theyhavesubstantiallystimulatedpeople’swisdomandingenuityoflanguageuse,andalsoenlargedourChinesevocabularytoanunimaginableextent.Besides,theyareafashionwhichhasreflectedindividuals’wayoflifeandtheirstateofmindintheInternetage;theyaremorethanjustalanguagephenomenon,butanewsocialandculturalphenomenon.Also,theirEnglishtranslationisnotonlygoodforextendingtheirglobalinfluence,butanindispensiblesupplementtothedevelopmentofhumanlanguage.Therefore,theydeserveourfullattentionandseriousstudy.

Indeed,alongwiththeirpopularity,theydoattractmuchattention.Manyscholarsandlinguilistshavetriedtheirhandsatthisnewsubject.However,thecurrentstudiesinourcountrymostlyconcentrateoncertainaspects.Forexample,PopularChineseInternetExpressionsandTranslationafter2000byChengShuiyingputsemphasisonthedescriptionofEnglishtransltionofNet-languageemergingafter2000;OntheSignificanceofNet-languagebyZhongQiuminplacesparticularstressonthesignificanceofNet-language.Sothisthesiswillgiveacomprehensiveintroductionofthefeatures,influences,translationstrategiesofChineseInternetbuzzwordsaswellasEnglishtranslationofthoseemergingintheyearof2009and2010.

 

2.FeaturesofPopularChineseInternetExpressions

Inthepresenttime,featuresofChineseInternetcatchphrasescanbeconcludedintothefollowingfiveaspects.

2.1Shorttimeeffectiveness

OnemaywellsaythattheInternetworldisundergoingamyriadofchangesinthetwinklingofaneye.Chancesarethatwhatwerealltherageyesterdaycouldbecompletelygoneatthepresent.SowithpopularInternetexpressions.Inotherwords,theyarehighlytime-limited,suchas打酱油(Iamhereforsomesoysauce),meansnoneofmybusinessandbecameacatchphraseforpublicapathywhenamanquestionedbyajournalistaboutascandalinthenewssaid,“Ithasnothingtodowithmeatall!

2.2Wideacceptance

Inthecyberspace,onemeansofexpressionpopularamongacertaingroupofpeopleiswelllikelytobewellreceivedbyothersjustinaminute.Thereasonscanbedescribedasfowllows:

1)TimeandspaceimposenorestrictionsonthelinkoftheInternet.Thankstoscienceandtechnology,peoplewhoarefromdifferentplacesorevenwhogetonlineatdifferenttimecaneasilygetintouchwitheachother.AlloneneedtodoistogetacomputerandmakesurethattheInternetservicesareavailable.

2)NowadaystherearealmostnoobstaclesintheprocessoftheInternetexchange,nomatterwithinacountryoronaglobalscale.Thecommonobstacles,suchas,language,custom,mannersandthelikearemoreandmoreeasilytobehandled,especiallyontheInternet.

4)Beinginterestinglivingandevenresonant,thesecatchphrasesarecapableofcatchingpeople’shearts.So,peoplecannotwaittomakethemwellknown.

Perhapsthisfeaturemighthelptomakeupforthementionedfeatureofshorttimeeffectiveness,becausesomeexpressionscanreallyturnintoeverydaywordsandthusbereservedafterbeingcontinuallyandwidelyusedwithinaperiodoftime.

ThemainpartofInternetusersareyoungpeoplewhoarequick-witted,energetic,inventive,andabletolearnnewthingsveryfast.Therefore,aslongasthoseInternetexpressionsareconsideredasfresh,interestingbythemandwinsenseofagreementfromthem,theywillbewidelyspread,orevenbeusedaslanguagemodelswithinashorttimeperiod.Forexample,菜鸟(cainiao,thecorrespondingEnglishwordis“newbie”,or“greenhand”)referstoaninexperiencedInternetuser;大虾(daxia,homophonicto大侠),“knowbie”inEnglish,referstoaknowledgeableandexperiencedInternetuser.

2.5Randomness

Whilechattingonline,peopletendtouserandomwordsratherthantochoosewordscarefullyaccordingtoidentityandsocialstatus.Thismaybeexplainedbywhatislistedbelow:

4)Thelastbutnottheleast,people’favourhelpstopromotethedevelopmentoftheserandomInternetexpressions.Itseemsthatpeoplelikethiskindofcommunicationalot.Needlesstosay,intherealworld,peoplewouldn’topentheirheartsandspeakoutalloftheirideasandopinionsduetoidentityandsocialstatus.ButtheworldontheInternetisquitedifferent.Peoplecantellwhatisonmindtotheirhearts’contentanddon’thavetofearanything,becauseit’sopenandanonymous!
