BACKGROUNDOFTHEINVENTION
Thisinventionrelatestosulfurizedolefinsand,in

mineralandsyntheticoilsoflubricatingviscosityatthespecificLewisacidused.Theamountrequiredis
concentrationssufficienttoimprovetheextremepres-readilydeterminedexperimentallybyaddingthepartic-
surepropertiesofsuchoils(includingthoseofthepp-ularLewisacidselectedforuseinthepreparationofthe
lyalphaolefintype)canbeobtainedbyreactingsulfur60adducttothereactionmixtureofsulfurmonochloride

timesufficienttocompletethereactionbetweenthe
sulfurmonochlorideandolefin.Thisisusuallylimited
byheatremoval.Olefinfeedrateispreferablycon-
trolledtoholdthetemperaturewithinthedesired
range.Whenthesulfurmonochloridehasbeencon-
sumed,thetemperaturewilldrop.Externalheatmaybe
addedtocontinuethereactionforafurthertime,but
