ThomasAlvaEdisonlituptheworldwithhisinventionoftheelectriclight.Withouthim,theworldmightstillbeadarkplace.However,theelectriclightwasnothisonlyinvention.Healsoinventedthephonograph,themotionpicturecamera,andover1,200otherthings.Abouteverytwoweekshecreatedsomethingnew.

ThomasA.EdisonwasborninMilan,Ohio,onFebruary11,1847.HisfamilymovedtoPortHuron,Michigan,whenhewassevenyearsold.Surprisingly,heattendedschoolforonlytwomonths.Hismother,aformerteacher,taughthimafewthings,butThomaswasmostlyself-educated.Hisnaturalcuriosityledhimtostartexperimentingatayoungagewithelectricalandmechanicalthingsathome.

Whenhewas12yearsold,hegothisfirstjob.HebecameanewsboyonatrainthatranbetweenPortHuronandDetroit.Hesetupalaboratoryinabaggagecarofthetrainsothathecouldcontinuehisexperimentsinhissparetime.Unfortunately,hisfirstworkexperiencedidnotendwell.Thomaswasfiredwhenheaccidentallysetfiretothefloorofthebaggagecar.Thomasthenworkedforfiveyearsasatelegraphoperator,buthecontinuedtospendmuchofhistimeonthejobconductingexperiments.Hegothisfirstpatentin1868foravoterecorderrunbyelectricity.However,thevoterecorderwasnotasuccess.In1870,hesoldanotherinvention,astock-ticker,for$40,000.Astock-tickerisamachinethatautomaticallyprintsstockpricesonatape.HewasthenabletobuildhisfirstshopinNewark,NewJersey.

ThomasEdisonwastotallydeafinoneearandhardofhearingintheother,butthoughtofhisdeafnessasablessinginmanyways.Itkeptconversationsshort,sothathecouldhavemoretimeforwork.Hecalledhimselfa"two-shiftman"becauseheworked16outofevery24hours.Sometimesheworkedsointenselythathiswifehadtoremindhimtosleepandeat.

ThomasEdisondiedattheageof84onOctober18,1931,athisestateinWestOrange,NewJersey.Heleftnumerousinventionsthatimprovedthequalityoflifeallovertheworld.
