Whatexactlyarewhitelions?

“Theyareacolorvariationofregularlions,”saysWilliamSwanson,directorofanimalresearchattheCincinnatiZoo,inOhio.

Whitelionsaretheresultofararecolorgenemutation(变异).Whenbothamaleandafemalelioncarrythesamewhitegenes,thereisagoodchancethatoneormoreoftheircubs(幼兽)willbebornwithwhitefur.

Notmanylionscarrythewhitemutation.Innature,it’srare.Amutationcanmakeananimal’ssurvivalmoredifficult.Forexample,beingwhitemakesitharderfortheanimaltomixwithitssurroundings.Mutationsalsocancausephysicalproblems,sothoseanimalsgenerallydonotsurvivelongenoughtoreproduce.

Butsometimeswhitelioncubsarebornamongwildlions,especiallyintwoareasofSouthAfrica.

In1975twowhitecubswerespottedinthewildinSouthAfricanreserve.Theywereseizedandsenttoazoo.Todayabout500cubsofthosetwowhitelionsandafewothersknowntohavethewhitecolorgenelivearoundtheworldinzoos,circuses,farmsandprivatepreserves.

Whitelionsmaybeextremelyrareinthewild,butbreeders(饲养动物的人)knowhowtocreatemoreofthem.Thishascreatedseriousconcernanddebate.
