ThefirstNewEnglandThanksgivingdidcelebratearichharvest.ThePilgrimslandedatwhatisnowPlymouth,Massachusetts,in1620.Theyhadadifficulttimeandthefirstwinterwascruel.ManyofthePilgrimsdied.Butthenextyear,theyhadagoodharvest.SoGovernorBradforddeclaredathreedayfeast(盛宴).ThePilgrimsinvitedIndianfriendstojointhemfortheirspecialfeast.Everyonebroughtfood.

Intime,othercolonies(殖民地)begantocelebrateadayofthanksgiving.ButittookyearsbeforetherewasanationalThanksgivingDay.DuringtheCivilWar,SarahJosephaHalepersuadedAbrahamLincolntodosomethingaboutit.Heproclaimed(宣布)thelastThursdayofNovember1863asadayofthanksgiving.

Bornin1864inVirginia,US,AnnaJarviswasaschoolteacherandbelievedchildrenshouldshowgratitude(感激)totheirmothersforalltheirloveandcare.Encouragedbyafriend,shewrotetothousandsofimportantpeople—politicians,churchmen,doctors,cityofficialsandaskedthemtosupportheridea:

aspecialdayoftheyearforthankingmothers.

In1910theGovernorofWesternVirginiaintroducedMother’sDayinthestate.ThedatechosenwasMay10—thesecondSundayinMay,whichisstillobservedinAmericatoday.ThisdatewaschosenbecauseMay10wasthedateonwhichin1908AnnaJarvis’smotherdied.In1914PresidentWoodrowWilsonmadeMay10theofficialdateforMother’sDaythroughouttheUnitedStates.

SoontherewasaMother’sDayInternationalAssociationandthecustombegantobeadoptedinmanycountriesoftheworld.
