ThenameChristmasisshortfor"Christ'sMass".AMassisakindofChurchservice.Christmasisareligiousfestival.ItisthedaywecelebrateasthebirthdayofJesus.
TherearespecialChristmasservicesinChristianchurchesallovertheworld.ButmanyofthefestivitiesofChristmasdonothaveanythingtodowithreligion.ExchanginggiftsandsendingChristmascardsarethemodernwaysofcelebratingtheChristmasintheworld.
ThestoryofthebirthofJesustakesplaceinBethlehem,acityofJudea.HismotherwasavirginnamedMary,andshewasbetrothedtoJoseph.Beforetheycametogethersexually,shebecamepregnantwiththechildoftheHolySpirit.Joseph,notyetherhusband,wastoldtohideheraway.Whilehethoughtaboutthesethings,Gabriel,anangeloftheLord,appearedtohiminadreamandtoldhimnottobeafraidtotakeMaryashiswife,andthatMarywouldbringforthaSon,andheshallcallhisname,Jesus,forhewouldsavehispeoplefromtheirsins.JosephagreedtomarryandprotectMary,andtoraiseJesusashisson.

OnChristmasDayoronChristmasEve,aspecialmealofChristmasdishesisusuallyserved,forwhichtherearetraditionalmenusineachcountry.Insomeregions,particularlyinEasternEurope,thesefamilyfeastsareprecededbyaperiodoffasting.CandyandtreatsarealsopartoftheChristmascelebrationinmanycountries.
3.OriginoftheChristmasTree
AlthoughitisgenerallyagreedthattheChristmastreeinitscurrentformcamefromGermanyintheearly19thcentury,thetraditionofdecoratingatreetomarkwintercelebrationsdatesbackhundredsofyearstoRomantimes,whentheRomansusedtodecorateevergreentreeswithsmallpiecesofmetaltocelebrateSaturnalia.
Legendalsosuggeststhat,inthelate16thcentury,MartinLuther(thefounderoftheprotestantreligion)wasthefirsttodecorateanindoortreewithcandleswhenheattemptedtorecreatethestarsshinningoveraforestofevergreens.
