Oneofthebest-knownsciencefictionbooksisNineteenEighty-FourbyGeorgeOrwell.Publishedin1949,itwasnotmeantasaprediction,butasawarning:

Orwellwasdescribingwhathesawastheoutcomeoftheideas,trends,andemergingtechnologiesofhistime.Manyinventedtermsfromthisnovelhavebecomecommonineverydayuse,suchas“bigbrother”and“doublethink”.Eventheauthor’snamehasbeenmadeintoanadjective—Orwellian—andhasbecomeawarningdescriptorforsituationswhereprivacyislostandtheindividualhasnopowerandiscompletelycontrolledbythegovernment.NineteenEighty-Fourwastranslatedintosixty-fivelanguageswithinfiveyearsofitspublication,settingarecordthatstillstands.
