AtestofspokenEnglishwillbeincludedasanoptionalcomponentofCollegeEnglishTest(CET).SomepeoplearguethatitisabsolutelynecessarytoholdatestofspokenEnglishinChinabecausewehavebeeninformedfrequentlythataChinesestudentwhohasbeenlearningEnglishforovertenyearscannotevencommunicatewithanativespeaker.AtestofspokenEnglishwillbringthecollegestudentsanawarenessoftheimportanceoforalEnglish,andwillthushelpthemwiththeircommunicatingskills.

Ontheotherhand,someothersstillmaintainthatagoodcommandofreadingandwritingskillswillbeenoughfortheEnglishlearners.Tosomeextenttheiropinionderivesfromthefactthatstudentsarealreadyunderconsiderablepressurefromtheircoursework.Anotherrequiredtestwillonlyaddtotheirburden.

Inmyopinion,atestofspokenEnglishwilldomoregoodthanharm.SinceChinawillcontinueitspolicyofopeningandreform,theabilitytospeakEnglishfluentlyisamustforanyonewhowantstosurpassothersinahighlycompetitivesociety.WhetherItakethetestornot,IshallsparenoeffortstopracticeoralEnglishintheremainingyearsofmycollegestudy.

2.Do“LuckyNumbers”ReallyBringGoodLuck?

Therearepeoplewhobelievethatsomenumbersbringgoodluck,whileothersbringbadluck.Forinstance,inChinathenumbereightisthoughttobelucky.TurningourattentiontotheWest,wefindthatthenumbersevenisconsideredlucky,butthenumber13isavoidedliketheplague.

Inspiteofalltheseclaims,mostpeoplewouldagreethatthereislittleevidencethatnumbershaveanyinfluenceonourlives.Infact,theysay,thereverseseemstobethecase.Foronething,wemightexpectcalculatorstobreakdowneverytimetheynotethenumber13,andforanother,althougheveryweekhassevendaysweknowthatnoteveryweekisluckyforus.

Weighingtheprosandconsofthesearguments,Iaminclinedtoagreewiththelatterpointofview.Itisobviousthatthereisnoscientificbasisforthebeliefthatthereisaconnectionbetweenluckandnumbers.Allinall,itseemstometobesuperstition.

3.MyViewonJob-Hopping

Job-hopping,orfrequentchangeofjobs,isbecomingincreasinglycommoninChinatoday.Astheeconomygrows,moreopportunitiesforemploymentareappearingthanbefore.Theresultisthatpeople,especiallyyoungpeople,aretemptedtochangejobsfrequently,seekinghighersalariesormoreinterestingpositions.

Nevertheless,manypeopleprefertostayintheiroldjobs.Thisispartlybecausetheyfeelloyaltotheirworkunits,andpartlybecausetheydisliketheideaofhavingtospendmuchtimetrainingforanewjob.Inaddition,althoughanewjobmayofferhigherpayormoreopportunitiesforpromotion,itmaybelocatedfarfromhomeandbeinconvenienttoreach.

Ithinkitisagoodthingfortheworkforcetobeflexible,sothatnewdemandsforpersonnelcanbesatisfiedquickly.However,ifapersonchangesjobstoooften,heorshewillcauselossestotheemployingunits.Moreover,frequentjob-hoppingpreventsapersonfromgainingvaluablejobexperienceanddevelopinggoodworkhabits.

4.ShouldFirecrackersBeBanned?

(a)

Somepeoplethinkthatsettingofffirecrackersisagoodthing.TheysaythatitisanancientChinesecustomwhichshouldbepreserved.Theyalsoclaimthatfirecrackersmakefestivalsandholidayoccasionsmorecolorfulandentertainingforbothadultsandchildren.

Ontheotherhand,therearemanypeoplewhosaythatfirecrackersshouldbebanned.Theypointoutthatfirecrackersareresponsibleforfireswhichdestroyproperty,andforinjuriessufferedbothbythepeoplewhosetthemoffandbyinnocentbystanders.Theyalsosaythatfirecrackersareawasteofmoneyandresources.

Myownpointofviewisthatweshouldpreservetheoldcustomoflettingofffirecrackers,whileatthesametimemakingthemharmless.Wecandothisbybanningfirecrackersfrompublicplaces.Inaddition,weshouldrestrictthesettingoffoffirecrackerstofestivaldays.

ThereisnodenyingthefactthatsettingofffirecrackershasbeenahotlydebatedtopicinChina.People’sopinionsdiffersharplyonthisissue.Someholdthepositiveview.TheysaythatitisanancientChinesecustomwhichshouldbepreserved.Theyalsoclaimthatfirecrackersmakefestivalsandholidayoccasionsmorecolorfulandentertainingforbothadultsandchildren.Withoutfirecrackers,festivalswouldbecomedullandcheerless.

Others,however,holdtheoppositeview.Theymaintainthatfirecrackersshouldbebanned.Theypointoutthatfirecrackersareresponsibleforfires,whichdestroy,property,andforinjuriessufferedbothbythepeoplewhosetthemoffandbyinnocentbystanders.Theyalsoarguethatfirecrackersareawasteofmoneyandresources.

Personally,Ibelievethatweshouldnotgotoextremes.Ontheonehand,weshouldpreservetheoldcustomoflettingofffirecrackers;ontheotherhand,weshouldmakeitharmless.Thiscanbedonebybanningfirecrackersfrompublicplaces.Inaddition,thesettingoffoffirecrackersshouldberestrictedtofestivaldays.

Therehasbeenmuchcontroversyoversettingofffirecrackersinthepastyears,witheachpartyowningconvincingevidences.ThosewhoareinfavorofsettingfirecrackersclaimthatitisanancientChinesecustomthatshouldbepreserved.Theyalsoarguethatfirecrackersmakefestivalsandholidayoccasionsmorecolorfulandentertainingforbothadultsandchildren.Withoutfirecrackers,festivalswouldbecomecoldandcheerless.

Ontheotherhand,therearemanypeoplewhoareoftheopinionthatfirecrackersshouldbebanned.Theypointoutthatfirecrackersareresponsibleforfireswhichdestroyproperty,andforinjuriessufferedbothbythepeoplewhosetthemoffandbyinnocentbystanders.Besides,theymaintainthatfirecrackersleadtoawasteofmoneyandresources.

Personally,Ithinkthatbothsideshavesomethingright.Actually,firecrackersshouldbeviewedasatwo-edgedsword,whichpresentsuswithbothbenefitsandtroubles.Butweshouldnotgiveupeatingforfearofchoking.Thebestpolicy,asIseeit,istomaximizetheiradvantagesandminimizetheirunhealthyinfluence,sothattheycanbenefitusinabetterway.

5.MyViewonOpportunity

Thereisnoconsensusofopinioninsocietyaboutopportunities.Therearesomewhothinkthatopportunitiescomeonlyrarely,andonlytoluckypeople.Othersarguethatopportunitiescometoeveryonefromtimetotime.

Personally,Iagreewiththelatteropinion.Itseemstomethatvariouskindsofopportunitiesareallaroundusallthetime.Thesecretistorecognizeopportunitiesandtograspthemintime,becausetheywillnotcometoyouoftheirownaccord.Forexample,myclassmatesoncerefusedtoenteranationalchemistrycompetition,becausetheythoughtthattheyhadnochanceofwinning.ButItookthisopportunity,andbypreparingwellImanagedtowinthefirstprize.

Nowmymottois:

Watchoutforopportunities,andatalltimesprepareyourselftotakeadvantageofthem.

Inviewoftheexpandingpopulationandtheshortageofvariousresources,wastingisreallyaharmfulhabit.Itputstrainsonthealreadyshortsupplyoffood,water,electricityandthelike.Besides,itgoesagainsttraditionalvirtueofhardworkandsimplelivingandmayleadstoaluxuriouslifestyle,whichisdangeroustothesoulsofmankind.

Therefore,itishightimethatwetakestepstostopwasting.Weshouldstartfromtriflesaroundourselves:

remembertoturnoffthetapwhenwefinishwashing;trytoordertheexactamountoffoodwecanconsume;neverthrowawayanyblankorhalfblankpiecesofpaper.Andalwaysremember,apennysavedisapennyearned.

Inviewoftheseriousnessofthisproblem,effectivemeasuresmustbetakenbeforethingsgetworse.First,itisessentialthatregulationsbeworkedoutandenforcedtobanwasting.Secondly,studentsshouldenhancetheirawarenessofsavingresources.Withproperlawsandanalertpublic,itwillonlybeamatteroftimeforwastingtobecomeathingofthepast.

7.HowIFinanceMyCollegeEducation
