Thetortoisesfacedotherproblems,too.Soonafterthefirstships,settlersarrived,bringingpigs,goats,donkeys,dogsandcats.Alloftheseanimalsruinedlifeforthetortoises.Donkeysandgoatsatealltheplantsthatthetortoisesusuallyfedon,whilethepigs,dogsandcatsatethousandsofbabytortoiseseachyear.Withinafewyears,itwashardtofindanytortoiseeggs—orevenanybabytortoises.

Finally,inthe1950s,scientistsdecidedthatsomethingmustbedone.Thefirstpartoftheirplanwastoremoveasmanycats,dogsandotheranimalsastheycouldfromtheislands.Next,theytriedtomakesurethatmorebabytortoiseswouldbeborn.Thisslow,hardworkcontinuestoday,and,thankstoit,thenumberoftortoisesisnowincreasingeveryyear.Perhapsthesewonderfulanimalswillnotdisappearafterall.
